Ok, so many of you know I'm in SIL's wedding on July 23rd. I will be 26 weeks I think.
This is the dress she picked for us (but in a nice blue).
I had to place my order the DAY I found out I was pregnant. I just couldn't order a maternity dress, because what if something happened with the pregnancy, then I'd be stuck with a maternity dress. I felt like it would be bad luck or something.
So when I tried the dress on in the shop, the 18 fit great. After that, I lost 15lbs. Then I got pregnant. So I ordered a 22.
The dress came last night. It is HUGE in the top and the hips, but it already hugs my belly. I sort of have a bump, but it just looks like bloat to me still, as it's not a round basketball belly like I hope to develop :-)
So I don't know if I should just wait til end of June and find a seamstress and hope for a miracle, or if I should find one now to have a plan...or if I should tell the bride. I spent $200 on this dress and there's not time to reorder, plus it would be a different dye lot, etc etc.
I feel bad...but honestly, what else can I do?
Re: WWYD (pregnancy/BM dress related)
Find a seamstress now. She can work on it periodically. Something similar happened with one of my aunts' weddings. Another aunt was almost full term by the wedding day. They had periodic fittings for her and it all worked out. You dress might end up looking a bit different, but that's to be expected.
I'd also tell the bride this is what you are going to do just so she knows.

can you see about getting a couple extra yards of fabric now? they might still have some in your dyelot. a good seamstress might also be able to move up a bit of the hip fabric to a belly panel (well, if there's a lot, like a couple of inches).
I would talk with the Bride and find a seamstress now. Usually you can let the seams out a bit or maybe they can make a panel out of the "extra" fabric from other places on the dress.
(If you can get extra fabric or even exchange it for another dress size, dye lots are really a thing of the past. Even if there were a difference, it looks like the type of fabric that would make it hard to even tell.)
Thanks for the advice ladies...I'm going to call the dress shop first, then find a seamstress...after I meet with her and have a plan I will let the bride know...
Great ideas!!!
So I called Aria - I can get 1/2 a yard for free! they won't guarantee a perfect match unless I send the dress back to them, but she said in that color it is usually ok.
If I want more than 1/2 a yard it is $35 a yard.
The girl that sits next to me apparently grew up in my town and gave me the name of a seamstress after hearing me on the phone with the dress people. So I will check them out maybe next weekend!
Phew.
If that doesn't work out the seamstress I used for my wedding dress was great and I'm going back to her for my BM dress in September. She's in Billerica.
find a seamstress now, if there is extra in the upper body then she should be able to use it to create a panel somewhere for your growing bump.
Also is there a way to order a sash/shawl or something from the same company that they could use as extra.
If all else fails ask the bride what she wants you to do!
Holly, if that's the seamstress I've heard about in Billerica, she's like a miracle worker... is she off of Boston Rd near the Bobs Store/ Market Basket?
