Anyone have a dental implant or bridge?

Matt has a tooth that should probably be extracted. It's a molar and he would need to replace it with either an implant or a bridge. His dentist is pushing a bridge, but I'm hesitant because it would require crowning two health teeth. The implant would be a long process and probably a bit more expensive up front, but would last longer and mean easier maintenance for the other teeth. I am pushing him to get a second opinion because both are significant procedures that have long lasting effects.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these?

Re: Anyone have a dental implant or bridge?

  • I don't personally, but know several people who have had issues with molars that required implants. I've never heard them get the option of a bridge. I agree he should get a second opinion.

My dad finally had to get an implant and a gold tooth in the way back because he cracked the porcelin crowns so many times and the tooth just wore out.

A lot of folks that are in their 40s/50s/60s now are having these issues because when they were younger the dentists would remove like the entire inside of the tooth and fill it up when doing a cavity filling. Now they just remove what they have to and patch things up, so it helps maintain the integrity of the tooth.

I think that while an implant is more procedures and money, it is the way I would go.

However, if he grinds or clenches his teeth I think implants can cause issues.
