re your tangent
I read a book awhile ago. .. Soul of Liberal, Conscience of a Liberal? Something - by Paul Krugman who's an economist by training, but also a pretty lefty liberal columnist @ NYT.
Anyway. .. he was talking about cost of living, changes in real wages over the last 50-100 years. The most intersting part to me was when he said that "real house hold income" has gone up ~18% over the last 30 years, which sounds pretty decent until you realize that the measure from 30 years ago reflected only one wage earner and in the recent number, most of the households were actually 2 income families.
