!!!!!!!
And I live in an urban downtown area. (!!!!)
WTF
I called animal control and their response "we don't deal with skunks." WHAT DO THEY DEAL WITH THEN???!!!
We have actually been smelling skunk at random times since this summer but this the first time it sprayed.
The damn thing sprayed our front porch by our front door. ***.
So, has this happened to you? If so, what do you do to remedy the smell?
Thank you.
Re: My house was skunked
Ewwww! That sucks! I have no idea how to get rid of the smell, though.
A couple of months ago DH and I saw a skunk in our front yard when we were leaving for work. We stood on the porch until it left for fear of being sprayed. All those Pepe le Pu cartoons have left me with a paralyzing mistrust of skunks.
There are sprays - call a garden center - for the outside.
Burn - and then extinguish - candles inside. Repeat a few times. It's the smokey smell that drives out the skunky smell, so you don't burn the candles for a long time.
You would think that an animal such as a skunk wandering around an urban core would raise the eyebrows of animal control, no? I am livid at their response.
Argh.
And I start my new job next week...what if the smell is still around?
What if has permeated everthing in the house?
Please don't call someone to remove the skunk unless they can GUARANTEE a humane release elsewhere. MOST wild animal removers do not let the animals go alive.

AC is very out dated. They only remove animals who pose a threat to the community - like rabies. BUT, again, if an animal is a rabies suspect it will be killed. The way you test an animal for rabies is to cut open the brain.
I found this:

I would also be tempted to try Simple Solution; it's what I use when my cat pees on the carpet and it does a fantastic job of getting rid of the smell--it's a biological stink weapon...can't hurt to try if all else fails.
I used to work at a vet and gave "skunk baths" to dogs who were sprayed. We used the baking soda/peroxide thing. Honestly - nothing works. You have to wait for it to leave on its own.
my read shelf:
Have you tried dishes of Ammonia around the house?
Sorry about the Skunk in the house, I would be checking into a hotel.
