3rd shift

I currently work in a factory building meters.  I've been there for about 10 months, working as a temp on 1st shift.  I'm getting the impression that I'll be getting moved to a different shift soon.  Our company is getting a big contract starting the beginning of June, meaning our production will sky rocket.  Our department plans on starting a 3rd shift and they've started a mass training with the temps.  3 temps just got hired by the temp agency to start on 3rd shift whenever it begins, but since I'm getting trained as well they're hinting about moving me.  They haven't officially told me, but the job I'm getting trained on already has operators there on 1st and 2nd.  It only makes sense that they would be moving me to 3rd.  Does anyone have experience on 3rd?  I'm trying to get advice in case I get moved.  Also, I would not be able to turn down the job.  Consequence being I would probably be let go, since they are not training anyone else for this job.  Also DH and I are about to close on our 1st house.  We can afford the mortgage on his job alone, but in July we will be paying rent as well as our 1st mortgage payment. (Our lease does not end until July 31st.)  I was hoping to have enough in savings by July to be able to take out either payment, and still have a nice enough amount in case something happens. (Car or appliance breaks down.)  TIA!

Re: 3rd shift

  • My dad works the night shift and DH's best friend does as well. Will you be getting a raise? Typically night shift makes a little more. Not sure what advice you are looking for. Everyone I know that works at night just has to figure out a good sleep schedule. Usually you'll have to plan on sleeping right when you get home and possibly having a nap in the evening. I would also plan your meals. Make whatever break you have in the night your dinner because you'll need the energy. Don't just load up on pop and junk food.
  • I would be getting a 35 cent premium/raise.  If I got hired on for 3rd shift it would be a significant raise.
  • I used to work at a job on the 3rd shift when I was in college many years ago. I actually liked it but I'm a night owl by nature. I worked 10PM to 6AM Sun. to Thurs.

Your schedule is a little off when you work the 3rd shift, but in a way it can be nice because you have more flexibility during the day for appointments, etc.

Like pp suggested, I would make my break at work my dinner break, then when I'd go home I would stay up a few hours to unwind and then go to bed. I'd wake up in the late afternoon. Although, if I had something to do I would just plan my sleep around it.

The sleep schedule can be difficult at first, but after a few weeks it should get better once you get into a routine that suits you. I would recommend getting some dark curtains for your bedroom though if you don't have them already, or some kind of light blocking curtain.

If you are in the process of buying a house you really don't want to quit so if I were you I would stick with it, and if you don't like it you can always keep applying for other jobs. Working on the 3rd shift gives you time during the day for job interviews Big Smile

  • I've been on 3rd shift for over a year now.  It takes some time to adjust!  I don't mind it now, but there are times when my sleep patterns get screwed up and I have trouble staying awake/sleeping during the day.  One advantage is I get an extra $200/month in my paychecks :)

I work 4 days on, 2 days off, 8 hours shifts.  I usually go home and got to bed within the hour (unless I have errands to run).  Invest in some dark curtains!! They are a lifesaver on super sunny days!

I'm lucky in the sense that my husband has a crazy work schedule (sometimes he works overnights, up to 12+ hours at a time, sometimes he goes away for a few days) so it works for us.  We also don't have any children to worry about - our 2 dogs entertain themselves during the day.

  • I should also mention I'm a 911 Dispatcher.....so there are sometimes hours where we don't have calls....which makes for a sleepy person!  If you have a job in which you are constantly busy, it may be easier.  I have to bring lots of things to do to keep me occupied in down times.
