Mention upcoming trip in interview?

I'm always unsure about the "etiquette" on this. I'm interviewing for a full-time nanny position on Thursday and I am going away for 2 weeks in October (we are having an at-home reception type of party since we got married here and majority of friends and family could not attend..and flying from Hawaii to Maine is no small trip and the one time a year we are back home, so we are making the most of it and going for 2 weeks), do I mention this in the interview? Or, assuming I get hired, wait until August or so and say "I'm going away 2 weeks in October". It's 5 months off, so I wasn't sure if it was worth mentioning.

I would not mention it until they make you an offer.  When they make the offer, be upfront that you will be taking the trip in October for two weeks.  At that point, it would be fair for them to say "oh, well, if that is the case, then we won't hire you..." but most times if they have picked you as their #1 choice to care for their child(/children), they probably won't back off just b/c of your trip - they'll make alternative plans.

  • Ditto Wahoo.

And as ECB often notes, plenty of people have long-term vacation plans that happen to coincide with jobs/interviewing. Employers understand this. Just let them know as early as possible so you can work with them to find alternative child care during that time.

    Exactly. ;)

But ditto the rest of what Dr.L said too - if offered the job, give them as much notice as possible.  In this situation, if they can't find back-up, they would have to plan on taking time off from their own jobs and having as much notice as possible would probably be greatly appreciated.

  • Thanks ladies! I just get nervous about getting hired and then right after saying "oh, by the way...". People have lives though and vacations pop up, I just hate feeling like an inconvenience! I'm a perfectionist, it's a problem haha. I'll ask her how vacation/time-off is handled in the interview, and if I get the job I'll go from there. Thanks again!
