One of those moments that made me smile today...

So I had to go out to one of our local high schools and interview some football players for a story I'm working on.

As we're done and walking off the field, they asked me if I had voted; I told them I had (didn't say who!) and then asked them if THEY voted since they were seniors.

Both of them said they did and talked about how excited they were to have voted in their first presidential election, etc. But one of them took it further and said something along the lines of, "This election is such a big deal for our country. It's really important and I'm just happy I was able to vote for someone today I really believed in. Not to get political, but I read up on some of the things Obama wants to do with education and his college tuition credits for community service and I just thought that was awesome. It's really imporant to give kids like us as many opportunities as possible. That's what it's all about, opportunities."

I kind of stood there dumbfounded and so happy inside. Not because of WHO he voted for, but simply because here was this 18-year old kid from one of the toughest neighborhoods and worst high schools in the area and he WAS NOT talking about voting for someone because of talking points, change, or race.

He did his research, found an issue that mattered to him and could articulate why he felt the way he felt.

With my job, I admit it--I'm around high school kids a lot. And I don't always have high expectations. But this kid today just made my day. And reminded me that no matter what happens tonight or tomorrow or in the next four years, there are young people out there that really care and want to be really involved and that is GREAT.

Another heartwarming moment today: I called a coach because I needed to get out to practice at another school and do more interviews and he said, "You can't come today. I gave the team the afternoon off because I want my 20 seniors to go out and vote. Can you come tomorrow?"

Wait--a football coach willing to give up a day of practice so his players can go vote? AWESOME!!!!
