A super long update...

Jacob - He's made progress but is still really behind, we're taking him to a developmental pediatrician on July 15 (originally it was for Aug 26 but we just go a call today that there was a cancellation. The possibility of autism has been brought up by the OT we work with. The only people who know IRL are my parents, I've accepted it, if that's what it is, then that's what it is. We're just focused on doing what we need to do today and taking things one day at a time.

Audrey - She's rolling over from her back to her belly and has been for a couple weeks. She's such a happy baby and is a talker, she is always squawking. She is in OT for the torticollis but it hasn't made much of a difference yet, now that she is rolling herself onto her belly and getting a ton of tummy time I'm hoping things improve quicker, at least her head has rounded out!

Me & DH - I resigned from my job as an adjunct. I was very unhappy and *** really hit the fan the last week of the semester and it took every ounce of self control I had not to burn my bridges and just turn in a nice letter of resignation. I don't regret my decision at all, I feel so much better not having that stress in my life. I

We've made some major diet changes in our home. We discovered in March that DH has a gluten intolerance, we don't know if it is actually celiacs or just an intolerance. A diagnosis of celiacs would involve dh having to go back on a diet that contains gluten for 2 weeks and then getting his colon biopsied. The treatment for celiacs involves avoiding gluten, which is what we are already doing. We've talked to some Dr's and some feel he should have the official diagnosis and others don't feel he needs an official diagnosis since it won't change anything (and it would torture DH to go back to how he was). Either way we just need to be sure he is getting a colonoscopy done starting at 40 instead of 50 because of a higher rate of colon cancer with celiacs. DH had been struggling with this for almost his whole life and had been diagnosed with IBS and Colitis as there was never an answer. I can't even begin tell you how much better his and our lives have been the last two months have been since we have been GF. We are GF as a whole family because it is easier. We are also Dairy free because Audrey has a milk allergy and I'm BF. So we are a GF and dairy home which means no fast food or eating out because we don't know what's in the food. We eat really healthy now and it's been wonderful. We basically are going to live this way for the rest of our lives, since putting Jake on the GF and dairy free diet, aka the autism diet,  we have seen huge improvements. It really pisses me off when people "feel sorry" for my child because he can't eat the foods other kids eat, but I hope he will grow up with healthy eating habits. I've definitely developed more of an "eat to live" attitude instead of letting life revolve around food in the last few months, food is just food instead of comfort, there really is nothing that I miss because I feel so much healthier.

Since we have made this change DH and I have dropped a ton of weight. I've lost all the baby weight from Audrey and Jake plus an extra 7 lbs. I'm back to the weight I was at about 4 years ago, I still have about 20 to go until I'm back to where I was when I started dating DH.

ummm, I think that's about it for right now...

Re: A super long update...

  • Wow, you have a lot on your plate right now! Hope everything works out with Jake! I've do not know anyone with Autism and now there are 3 people here on the nest with boys the same age that may have it. That to me is just really odd! :( How is Jake w/ his sister?

Good job on the weight loss! I wish I could get motivated!

Have to plan a zoo trip when the weather gets nicer.

  • wow...that is a lot on your plate.  At least you're trying to keep your heads up and doing what's best for everyone in the family!

I know that whole-family diet overhauls are tough...we're doing one right now as well (a little more slowly than you are though).  DH's migraines are triggered by foods quite often, so he's basically on an Atkins-type diet.  He hasn't had fast food in about 6 weeks.  He's lost 30+ pounds by eating this way.  He now eats 4-6 times each day, which is CRAZY because he used to eat nothing all day until he got home, and then it was crap - like fast food and stuff.

I still cook separate dinners for R and I sometimes, we're all slowly getting away from a bunch of processed stuff.  My poor grocery bill is MUCH higher, but it's balancing out because we aren't eating out.

Good luck with everything and keep us updated!

  • I just sent you an email
