Is anyone else getting hit super hard with these this spring? I've given up and made an appointment to see the doctor. Benadryl, Claritin and Zicam have nothing on these allergies. I woke up at 3am this morning and could not get back to sleep since I could barely breathe.
I'm seriously hoping the doctor has something much stronger than OTC meds she can prescribe.
Re: Seasonal Allergies
My allergies have been awful this year too! And I hate taking the allergy meds, they make me feel like I'm in a haze... I'm not sure which is worse.
I'm terrified for june/july. I'm horribly allergic to most weed pollen. If this spring has been any indication of how the summer is going to be, I'm in trouble.

Basically this year we went from 0 to 100 for allergies so people who normally don't suffer are having issues.
Zicam won't do crap for you. Benedryl isn't meant to control seasonal allergies on a regular basis.
Claritn will only work if you take it on a regular basis for an extended amount of time. It needs awhile to get into your system to even be effective.
The best the doctor will give you prescription-wise would be if you need a decongestant (Claritin D, Zyrtec D etc). By now, most regular pills are OTC.
You can get a prescription for eye drops and nose sprays which will help, depending on your symptoms and what you are allergic to.
Mine have been bad too. And what is making it worse is that my Dr doesn't want me to take anything for them until my 2nd tri. I gave him the side eye on that one since my 2nd tri starts after all the trees are done blooming so what he basically said was deal with it.
My neti-pot has been my best friend the last few weeks. Have you tried using that on top the OTC meds?
I don't know why, but the neti pot freaks me out. I don't think I could handle pouring liquid into my nose.
That sucks that your doc said no meds until the 2nd tri!! A couple weeks after I found out I was pregnant I had a nasty cold and the doctor said Sudafed and Benadryl were good to take.
Yes! Mine have been terrible. I switched from Claritan to Allegra. Which seems to work better. Then I tried Zyrtec and that seems to be better than Claritan as well.
Of course I am hit today, but it might be a cold. I have that "sick" feeling and not as much of an allergy feeling.
::knocks on wood::
so far, mine have been in check. I take Sam's Club version of Zyrtec (thanks Shelly!). I used to take them at the beginning of spring, but last year I was horrible and had to have a steriod shot to help.
I decided then that I would take the meds year-round so that it was constantly built up in my system. So far, so good.
The neti-pot takes some getting used to but it works wonders!
It does suck that I can't take my allergy meds but I get the injections which help too.
That's me!!!! I've NEVER had allergy issues, but my eyes were itching like crazy. It finally dawned on me that it was probably allergies.
Me: My eyes are super itchy. OH! Wait! Is that allergies?
H: Yeah, sounds about right.
Me: Hey I have allergies!!
(A similar conversation took place when I was pg and realized I had heartburn for the first time ever. H gets that all the time and has allergies, so I finally understood his pains.)
My Happy House
Normally I would be a hot mess right now, but....
I will say a little "praise jesus" because since I have been getting the allergy shots (for about a year now), I have barely noticed my allergies. I had one day where I was very sneez-ey, but that is it. It's seriously a freaking miracle!
Mine have been hell the past couple of weeks & H has even been suffering and he seldom does.
I love Fluticasone (nasal spray). It makes me not want to scratch my face off.
10 Years Later
Glad to hear it Mara!!!
I am on shots (over 6 years at the moment) and generic zyrtec (spring and fall) right now. My eyes have bothered me a couple days and I had a couple sneezy days, but overall I haven't been a total wreck.
Looks like Saturday is going to be even worse

My #1 allergen (birch trees) is out right now.
It is so crazy but mine are not bothering me at all, we will see what happens when we get white floaties all over the place though.
DH on the other hand who very rarely has allergy issues, is getting hit pretty hard.
Funny thing is, mine are usually bad this time of year and i have had minimal problems. i wonder if all the rain is actually helping me.
The fall is usually much worse for me though.
I was wondering the exact same thing.
The rain knocks all the crap out of the air. But then people with mold allergies suffer worse. And when the rain stops, crap starts growing more and you are screwed. awesome right?
Now I'm wondering if I have mold allergies....mine have been worse since it's been rainy the past few days.
Mine have been awful! So have DH's. They've been so bad, we've both contemplated calling into work. I've basically been sick for 2 weeks now.
I really hope this doesn't continue. Normally I can take my claritin every day and function - but it's getting really bad.
