Vacuum recommendations!

I'm looking for a vacuum that either doesn't have a beater brush or has one that you can turn off. We have berber carpet in our home and the brush seems to pull up the braided nap. The main issue though is that between me and our pets we have to constantly cut long hair off the bar to keep it from burning up the motor and it's a huge inconvenience we'd like to avoid. I'd like something larger capacity so it doesn't need to be cleaned out after each room and something that can handle pet hair. Any suggestions?

  • Hoover Wind-Tunnel Pet Rewind.  That's what we have, you can turn the brush off and it has pet tool attachments.  The suctions is really good.

  • Bissell Healthy Home has an option to turn the brushes off, and has several pet friendly attachments. It has good suction. I've only had to 'deep clean' it once (pulling long hairs out of the brushes) in 3 years of ownership.

  • We recently purchased a Dyson Animal canister.  It does have an attachment that allows you to turn off the brush rotation, but I don't feel the vacuum as a whole is good for rugs (and the section seems to be poor).  The 'heads' are not heavy enough to make a difference on some of our more interesting rugs.  It works just fine on carpets (but still the weight is kind of an issue).  Everything else about it is really handy, but I think if I had to do over, I might have gone with a heavier headed vacuum that was bagless and still had similar attachments to the Animal.

  • Thanks for the recs! Especially yours, panda. We had company coming over tonight so I had to make a quick decision and decided to run to Target this morning and pick up the Pet Rewind. It worked great AND it was on sale! Double score!
