BR: Last Day of Work?

Sorry this isn't on TB..but there are more of you here.

How long did/will you work? Did you make your due date your last date? Did you work until you called them and said "I'm in labor"?

Or did you pick a date like...I'm due on Tues the 23rd so I will work until I have the baby or Friday the 26..whichever comes first? Is it worth it to have those days of just being home waiting?

PS: my commute is about 30-45 min one way.

I plan on working until I go into labor.  As nice as it would be to have some time off to relax pre-baby, I would prefer to use all of my time when the baby is here.

  • My commute is 15 minutes at the moment and I think my boss might be cool with me working from home a bit (the owner is totally fine with it though) but I plan on coming in up until my due date.

  • I worked up until the day I delievered. I will be honest though, the end is rough and it would have been nice to have a few days to myself.

  • Due to my maternity leave policy, I originally was planning on working up until I went into labor.  At 36 weeks I started working 1 day from home (I have a 45min-1hr commute).  At 38 weeks I was extremely uncomfortable and already contracting (at work really bad) so I turned in my paperwork to my doc.  I was taken off work at 39 weeks.  The first week of my leave was a "grace period" meaning the STD people had to review my paperwork.  I could either take it unpaid or use sick time or vacation time to cover it.  I chose vacay time.  I went in to labor on my due date.

Having that week off was heaven.  I was extremely uncomfortable and I took that time to walk walk walk, clean, prepare, etc. and try to get myself going into active labor.  It was the best decision my doctor and I made.  If she hadn't deemed me "disabled" I would have had to work that week, so in my book she was my hero :)

  • I was due Tues the 25th but wanted to take 1 of my 12 weeks off prior so my last day was Fri the 14th.

Ellie didn't get the memo so I was bored out my skull at home for 2.5 weeks.

  • I had planned on leaving about two weeks early all along.  I was on my feet pretty much all day at work so it was starting to get really rough around 30 weeks.  My last appointment before I was going to go on leave showed my bp had gotten somewhat high.  So they pulled me anyway and put me on bedrest.

Looking back I wish I could have stayed working.  It was pretty boring just sitting around waiting for my son to get out!

  • If you can swing it - try to take the week off of your due date.  I worked up until I was induced - a week overdue.  I couldn't take time off because my maternity leave was unpaid as it was.

I was super cranky, I cried easily, I snapped at everyone, I was frustrated and uncomfortable.  I was on pins & needles the entire time wondering if my water was going to break at any second of if the contractions would come out of no where.

Next time I plan to hopefully have the week off prior to the EDD because I could have used that time to relax and chill out and not have to worry about being professional when all I wanted to do was scream at everyone.

  • With Noah, I had a planned induction, so I was going to work until the week before.  My bp ended up spiking so I was written off work 3 weeks before.  I cannot tell you how wonderful it was having that time off.  The days were a little boring, but I wasn't sleeping well so it was nice to sleep in and take naps throughout the day.  I had 3-1/2 weeks off before Nathan came.

  • I plan on working until I go into labor.  My short term disability is really crappy so I don't think we can truly afford me being off any longer than what is covered.

  • I plan to work up until my due date or until they take me off. I think it would be really nice to have time at home before having the baby but I also think I would drive myself crazy and I'd rather have the time after he is born.

I have no idea how that will actually work though. I guess I just call and say, well not coming in today I'm going to have a baby instead?!

Probably one of the easiest call in sick days ever. I always have such a hard time calling in.

  • My due date is on Monday ...still working because I choose to do so ...OB said she will take me off anytime I want ...but I am taking 10-12 weeks off ...so trying to get my max amount of time with baby when he decides to get here.....but I also feel ok to work and have shortened my work schedule as it is.

  • My original plan was to work until she arrived, but that changed when they decided that I needed a c-section. I was scheduled for a Friday c-section and I took the 4 days before off. I am glad I did, I was able to get so much done that I wouldn't have time or the energy for if I was working. Last minute shopping/cleaning/organizing and sleep! I remember my last thursday just sitting on my couch all day watching trashy tv in my pjs... it was wonderful!

  • I worked up until the day.  I even had an extra outfit and puppy pee pads on my desk chair and in my car,, just in case my water broke at work.

I ended up having the baby on a Sunday, so it didn't matter, but I didn't want to waste my maternity leave at all!   I just made sure to call our secretary and let her know I was in labor, so she could pass the message along to my boss.

I was about 30 minutes from home too.  I figured with the first baby, I had enough time to get home, grab my bags and go to the hospital

ETA: The end was uncomfortable, but being I sit at a desk all day, I was able to handle it.  I just put my feet up.  And work gave me a handicap spot, so I didn't have to walk far in the winter.  I had off 2 days for holidays and I was bored and probably strained myself more from trying to clean and organize.  Work was a good distraction for me.

  • I was planning on working up to my due date, which was a Saturday. If I was overdue, I wasn't going to work after my due date, I assumed I would be uncomfortable.  I ended up going into labor the Sunday before my due date and DD was born Monday morning at 6am. DH texted my best friend, who is a coworker, and she spread the word that I wouldn't be at work.
