steel cut/Irish oatmeal - how do you make it?

IIRC - a bunch of you eat this regularly.

I made this a few weeks ago and tried just sprinkling it w/ brown sugar, cream and some raisins, but it was still really bland; I had to add like 1/2 cup of brown sugar to make it palatable.

How do you eat/serve this?

  • Banana and peanut butter

  • Just simmer on the stove for like 30 minutes or however long it takes, and I add raisins, milk, and cinnamon. Once its on the table a swirl maple syrup in it. you have to tweak it til you get it to your liking.

There's also a recipe on weelicious for steel cut oats in the crockpot, cooks overnight and then breakfast is waiting for you when you get up. Just be careful, I burnt mine.

  • I've tried making it and I don't have the patience Embarrassed but the few times I have, I added raw honey and chunks of strawberry.

Maybe in the crockpot would be a good option for me.

  • I make it in the slow cooker with half vanilla soy milk and half water and just throw in whatever we have on hand.  Usually dried cranberries and chopped apples, cinnamon, apple butter, a touch of brown sugar...yum.

  • For those that have made it in a crockpot, do you make a large batch and keep it (does it stay good and re-heat well if you do) or do you just make enough for everyone the next morning?

I've made a larger batch and then heated it up later. It turned out fine, a little gummy, but I just added more milk.

This.  You have to spray the cooker with a little Pam to keep from getting a permanent oat crust on the cooker - but it turns out so good that I always end up eating more than I'd meant to.  It gets this crunchy outer layer that's amazing.

  • I buy the stuff that can be cooked in 3-5 minutes.

I use raisins, walnuts, cinnamon, and agave nectar (instead of sugar).

I've also done brown sugar and cinnamon.

  • The only time it turns out well for me is when I make a large batch in the crockpot overnight. I usually just add some brown sugar and/or maple syrup and whatever berries I have on hand.

  • I really like it mixed with yogurt. Or brown sugar and fruit

  • I buy the Quaker quick oats. Slice a banana over it. Pour in boiling water from the hot pot, mash it a little and add a splash of milk. Add a packet of Splenda or some honey if you need it sweeter. Sometimes I mash in sliced strawberry or blueberries, but my go-to is banana. It's going to take a little time to get used to the "bland-ness" if you're used to the super sugary packets.
