bc question

Does anyone use/have recommendations for non-hormonal BC?  I don't want to go back on the pill since (1) I'm BF-ing; (2) we want to TTC #2 in another year or so and the pill takes a while to get on/off.  Thinking about an IUD but not sure about other options??  (I mean, I know about them, but real life experience is different than what research/reading material says).  Help!!

I haven't done any kind of non-hormonal, but I'm thinking I'll try FAM/charting after we have Predator.  We're in the same boat, as we'll likely want to TTC when he/she is around a year.

I think the actual insertion and removal of the IUD can be pretty invasive, like I thought they had to dilate your cervix, so I'm not sure if I'd do it for short term.  But I know when we were TTC, I knew exactly when I ovulated just from the pee sticks, and that left us a wide range of time when I knew I wouldn't get pg with pretty good certainty if we did it then.  And that was without actually charting, just doing the OPKs.

  • We chart and use condoms during peak fertility.  I'd been on BC for 8 years and DH was freaking out a little over potential long term effects.

If you're thinking of charting definitely check out Taking Charge of Your Fertility (Toni Weschler).  I still haven't read the whole thing thru, but it's one of the best resources.  It's good even if you're not going to chart.

And on a side note, I thought some IUD's have hormones?

  • I had Mirena and LOVED IT! I am such a fan. I had it in for 2 1/2 years after I had E and after the next one I will get it too. Insertion and removal was no worse that the itch of swabbing from a pap. I had no periods, my hormones were for once normal (I can't do BCP) and I never had to worry about anything! You can leave it in for 6 months or 5 years. I highly recommend it!

  • i have had Mirena for almost 3 years. LOVE IT !! putting in wasn't bad, took a Motrin before and had mild cramping for a few hours. the first 2-3 months my period was pretty heavy but now i have none, spotting once in a blue moon.

once my 5 years is up i will defiantly have it put back in .

i also have a 2 friends that had theirs and removed to have a baby and both were prego in under 4 months

  • We've also been using the FAM/charting method.  And I also recommend Taking Charge of Your Fertility, plus using Fertility Friend (fertilityfriend.com) to help chart and track. Not only is it good BC, but it's good to help you know your cycles and when you're most likely to conceive for the next one.  I don't think we'll ever use another form of BC.

I'm not sure I'd really want to do an IUD for just a year.  It's good to see the stories above, but my sister had Mirena put in a few years ago and it was pretty bad.  She said it hurt like a biitch for quite a while and was not a pleasant implantation (or whatever they call it...)
