let's talk cable/internet/phone

Right now we are on a contract with Comcast for Cable with movie channels, Internet and Home Phone. We pay $175/mo. I'd like to cut this bill to $100 or less when our contract is up in October.

I'd like to keep cable and internet, home phone is negotiable. We do have a dish, but we've never used it, old owners did. Home phone seems smart to have, but not necessary as we both have cell phones.

I'm open to trying any carrier, so tell me what you have and what you pay. If it was up to DH, we'd keep movie channels (he loves the movies on demand) but I'm not as attached....plus I can't see us having so much time to watch them later on. As long as basic cable has ESPN, he'll be okay with that. Also, does basic cable give you HD channels, or is HD extra?

  • $175 a MONTH?!?!

    Jesus.

    Read this: http://www.erica.biz/2009/negotiate-your-phone-bill/

& call Comcast ASAP. I used this about 2-3 weeks ago on both AT&T & DirecTV & got both of my bills lowered.

I pay $19.99 for stand-alone DSL with AT&T (I think its $14.99 if you have a phone line)

I pay $65ish for DirecTV with HD & whole-home DVR service. I LOVE DIRECTV. Seriously, they're great. If you decide to go with DirecTV, I'll give you my account number & you'll get $10 off for 10 months & I'll get $10 off for 10 months.

  • I know, it's obscene... but we signed a 2 year contract and if we break it we have to pay $250, so at this point the savings probably wouldn't be enough to make a difference. That's why in October, I'm going to start completely from scratch with it and not sign any contracts. I put JJ in charge of this crap, and well, that's what happened. To be honest, I really didn't even know that we could negotiate though... but my mom is going to make all the calls as me when she's here this summer to get us lower rates moving forward.

ETA: The $250 cancellation also includes dropping any portion of the three, so I couldn't renegotiate anything until the contract is up.

  • Why wait? Call now.

I'm in a contract with DirecTV & they still lowered my rate.

These numbers are awesome. This is exactly the route I was hoping to go when we get into the house. I wasn't sure if you could get DSL from AT&T without the phone line so I'm glad to hear that. We had DirecTV in the past and we loved it. We really want DVR but we were going to sacrifice if it didn't fit into the budget. I'll have to touch base with you for more details once we get ready to set things up.

  • Check into netflix too, it might be cheaper than paying the premium rate for the movie channels and there are a TON of movies available to stream right to your tv.  I think we pay $8/month for it and it streams through the Wii and Apple TV.

  • I think Devon already gave you great advice on negotiating, I just wanted to add that we cancelled our house phone and haven't missed it at all. It is 100% an unnecessary bill. I also cancelled my Netflix and premium movie channels and I don't miss either one. I imagine that when the baby comes you will be way too busy to miss it too.

  • I don't have much advice, as we have Comcast for our cable and internet, but wanted to add absolutely get rid of your home phone in October. I am honestly shocked whenever I hear of anyone having a home phone anymore. I haven't had one in 6 years. DH canceled his soon after I met him because every body called his cell except telemarketers.

  • To answer another question: Comcast basic cable includes HD Channels.

  • We have Comcast tv and internet and pay about $120/month. We do not have any movie channels but we have HD and DVR.

  • Okay so I just called and this guy's story was MUCH different than the one a year ago about the contract thing. He said we didn't pay the penalty if we downgraded, just if we cancelled comcast totally.

We got rid of home phone and movie channels, and are now just using basic internet and cable with DVR and HD channels. We're paying $80.

Honestly, I know I won't miss the extra channels at all, but JJ is pretty bummed. However, we lived without them for 24 years, we'll be ok without them now. I'm just relieved that now we won't have stupid movies on all of the time when he's home, to be honest :)

  • Once your contract is up, I have a sales guy that we went through for ours here, and he can get better deals than calling Comcast. When moved in here, we got a home phone (DH uses it for work now and changed his cell number since people were abusing it), internet, and cable with On Demand and the HBO channels for $89/month. It ends up being about $105 with taxes and the modem fee (we'll be buying our own soon though, saving $7 a month). We did pay a $19.95 connection fee, and $9.95 each for our room and the boys' room, but those were one-time obviously (and our install guy was late, so we got a $20 credit anyway, lol).

We use the On Demand all the time for some of the freebie kids' shows (Blue's Clues, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, etc), so that was a necessity. We also paid $10 extra for HBO, since we watch Game of Thrones, True Blood, etc. It is month-to-month (I never even knew Comcast had contracts, honestly), and the main reason we didn't go with satellite was not to be stuck in a contract if we weren't satisfied.

Let me know if you'd like this guy's number just to get some info. He's awesome, and will discuss all your options and doesn't try to put you into something you don't need.

Can you send his number to me? If I don't convince DH to get rid of cable, then I will call him next week.
