Can we discuss "the Rapture"?

What and why is this?  And seriously, WTH? I hate being paranoid about this kinds of stuff.

It's also why I won't let JP watch "end of days" stuff on Nat.Geo. and the Disc. Channel.

Re: Can we discuss "the Rapture"?

  • the synposis on MM was basically that the believers go to heaven and the rest of us stay here on earth for trials. MM is great for these basic synposis (and I'm not interested enough in it to google further).

If the world does end at 6 pm tomorrow (random time the morning radio threw out there), I will sadly be dying in my car between phlly and baltimore with a couple of college kids.

    Here are the apparent "basics"

    What is the Rapture?

According to some Protestant Christians, the Rapture is an end-time event when born-again Christians will be "caught up" into the air and meet Christ in the sky. Many believe that this will happen unexpectedly, and people will suddenly rise from their cars or kitchen tables into the sky. At some point after the Rapture, Christ will begin a thousand-year reign.

    When will the Rapture occur?

The Rapture will occur at a time related to the tribulation, the seven-year period before the Second Coming of Christ during which the Antichrist will be in power. There are three major schools of thought about when it will occur:

    Pre-tribulation rapture
    Mid-tribulation
    Post-tribulation
Many believe the tribulation period will be a time of famine, disasters, and illness.

What are the biblical references to the Rapture?
The following verses, among others, have been interpreted by some to be evidence of the Rapture:

    1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

    Mark 13:26-27

    Revelation 11:11-12

What will happen to those who are left behind?
Most of humanity will remain on the earth. God will pass judgment on non-believers during the tribulation period. Many predict mayhem for those who are left behind, including mass confusion, airplane and car crashes due to missing drivers and pilots, and rampant crime and lawlessness.

What is the "partial Rapture" theory?
The belief that certain Christians will rise to meet Christ at the beginning of the tribulation. During the tribulation, there will be other periods of Rapture, when more believers will rise in the air to meet Christ.

What will happen after the Rapture/tribulation period?
Christ will begin his thousand-year reign on earth, which will be a time of justice, peace, and joy. When this millennial reign comes to a close, history will end and there will be a "new heaven and a new earth."

The formula that came up with tomorrow's date has been proven seriously flawed.  Many Christians also believe that only God knows when the Rapture will happen so also to predict it is also flawed.

Most people think it is another Y2K scare.

(I also want to point out that many people are saying "wait what?  What about December 21, 2012?  I thought that the Mayans predicted the world was going to end next year."

The Mayan calendar is a cyclical calendar that RESTARTS on that date, just as it has done in the past.  It doesn't mean they were predicting that the world was going to end, in fact the Mayans did very little in the way of predictions.

Okay, tangent over. Stick out tongue)

My mental picture is of the part that Emily quoted ... imagine sitting in the cockpit of the plane as the First Officer in mid conversation with the Captain and then *poof* like I Dream of Jeanie, the Captain disappears!  Haha!!

This is kind of how I picture it. Can you imagine. It is kind of a funny picture.

As a joke, DH told me that he was contemplating going out in the yard a little before 6:00p.m. and then leaving behind all his clothes and hide until I came out to find him, just to freak me out (I don't think I'd be raptured because the people who believe this also believe that I won't go to heaven because I haven't been baptized).
