I am going with DH to a party his company is putting on this weekend. Its dinner, dancing, and open bar at a very nice place and I'm really up in the air about what to wear. My top two choices are both black, knee length dresses but my only concern is that they are both a cotton-y material and I'm not sure if thats too casual.
#1: A-line with a straight neckline, can either be strapless or have spaghetti straps. Sort of a texture/pattern woven into the material but its pretty subtle.
#2: More fitted, with a collared halter top, buttons up the front.
Sorry, no pictures because both were bought in 08.
I bought #1 for my graduation, also wore it to my BFF's bachelorette party last month. #2 I have worn to a wedding. I do have a few other potential options but I don't feel like they are as flattering on me and I feel a lot more self-conscious in them. Really would prefer not to buy a new dress b/c a) I'm super picky and self-conscious, b) I'm still losing weight and c) I get dressed up pretty infrequently and would rather spend my money on something else.
Re: What does "cocktail attire" mean to you?
When i think "cocktail atire" i think dressier shorter dresses.
Do your dresses have any fluffy layers under them or something? b/c this is what im thinking of as the appropriate level of dressing up:
Don't mind the weird people i found on google. If one of your dresses is something like the black one in this, then i think you'll be fine. Just accessorize it up to make it look fancier and have a cute bag and shoes. And do your hair a little fancier than normal. You should be fine
And i picture DH in a sports jacket or something.
And i think i'd go with #1, it sounds dressier to me. Halter seems to informal

I agree. FWIW, I think the first option sounds better!
Thanks for the opinions! No puffy layers under either dress- I have one like that and I love the top on that but it needs to be taken in.
Question #2: For accessories...
Shoes: Basic black pumps (classier) vs. sparkly silver sandals
Purse: Black beaded clutch (the beads are a little shiny but its subtle) vs. shiny bronze clutch
Jewelry: Nicer, but more subtle/delicate stuff vs. more noticable but not as nice
Hair: My chin length bob is growing out. I can either straighten it or wear it down but in all likelihood if its down it'll be clipped up at some point, so leaning towards just starting off like that?
Sorry, I know I sound totally incompetent and like I'm unable to dress myself but I swear I can! Its just that DH is pretty new to this company, I've never met any of his coworkers (besides former classmates) before, and I want to make a good impression/not embarass him. Add to that that I've never been to a work party except for one held at work or a bridal shower before and that I really don't dress up a lot. Just combines for a lot of nerves!

Everyone welcome.
I'd go black pumps, bronze clutch and fun jewelry. For your hair, just go with whatever you're most comfortable. If it's easier for you to just pin it up beforehand, go for it.
Don't worry!!
I was in your boat exactly last week with my work recognition dinner! I had no idea what to wear until the day of and I felt silly asking coworkers (but I finally did).
Have fun! I would start with your hair up if you think you will end up putting it up anyway, then you won't have to worry about it.
DITTO!
