I'm about 90% sure I want a Kindle for my birthday, but I'm curious what others think and I have a few questions.
First - can you do the library book thing? I'm not in the habit of buying books, but I'm always at the library. I can't see spending money on a device that will cause me to spend more money to buy books.
Second - are they wifi?
Third - can you share books?
What else should I know about them? Anything that made you choose the Kindle of something else or instead go with a different reader?
Thanks!!!

Re: Kindle
I have a Nook, but I know that Kindles can't currently get library books, but are considering adding the function (Nook does have the function and I use it). Both Kindles and Nooks are WiFi and have lending capabilities between other users.
I chose the Nook over the Kindle for two reasons. First, my library lends on the Nook and actually have a huge e-book selection. Second, I wanted to support the brick and mortar bookstore.

Exactly this.
I have a Nook 3G + wifi, not Color.

Yes they have wifi and you can lend certain books. You cannot borrow books from the library yet but in a few months you can, it's supposed to come to the kindle in the fall.
I did my research and decided on the kindle, the library thing wasn't an issue for me and I heard it was coming soon. I personally cannot stand B&N and amazon has great customer service.
I have to say I was on the fence for a long time and I'm so glad I finally got one.

One other thing - you have to make sure your library supports lending to these devices. When I got my kindle, it didn't matter that it didn't get library books and the nook did because my library didn't lend books that way. Now they do, but the selection isn't that great.
You can also get a lot of the classics on the kindle for free. That has more than paid for mine - stuff I wanted to read but never got around to - and I got my kindle when they were more expensive.
2012 Reading Challenge
I LURVE my Kindle.
There are a few sites that let you know about free books. And as Becky said all the classics are free. You can loan and borrow books on Kindle and coming in the fall you will have the ability to get library books - as long as your library supports it.
It is so convinient and I have been reading so much more this year because of it.
One thing I would recommend is to go to Best Buy (I think they have both there) and play with both of them and see which you like better.
thanks for this rec Paige. I am on the fence of buying one too. I think I might do this.
Yay for e-readers! I have a kindle and absolutely LOVE it. I cannot say enough good things about it. I will say though, everyone who has a kindle loves their kindle, and same thing goes for people who have nooks. I really think the best way to decide is by going and playing with both of them at Best Buy... I decided on the kindle because it was lighter (only by a few ounces, but it is noticable to me), my mom has one so we are on the same account and can read the same books at the same time, I have many friends with kindles so I can share books, the kindle has a text to speech option, and I liked the physical feel of the kindle better. I did not like the fact that the touch screen on the nook is really slow compared to my cell phone and I've never been a big fan of B&N.
Whatever you do I would totally go with the e-ink over the color screens. I love that I can read in the bright sun... that will definitely come in handy this summer. I've read on my friend's ipad and I wouldn't be able to stand it for very long. The e-ink is awesome!
To answer your kindle questions (although they have already been answered), yes to wifi or upgrading to 3G, yes you can lend books to friends like you can on the nook, and there will be an update soon that will let you borrow library books. If your local library doesn't have a large e-book selection I know you can get a NY public library membership ($100ish) which has a huge selection.
Also, I just want to add in: I typically love to read NYT best sellers, but I have been finding some free free kindle books lately. They have a top 100 kindle books and top 100 free kindle books on the amazon site and different publishers do free books all the time. I think I have only spend $25-35 on books since I got my kindle at Christmastime. It is super incredible!!!! Get a kindle! You will love it!

LOVE my Kindle. Your questions pretty much have been answered so I will just add on. I found a site where you can download free books for any of the e-readers. They have all kinds of books. I downloaded 27 Dean Koontz books the other night. I also got one of The Hunger Games books through there and The Book Thief. They have classics and new books. Pretty much any book that I have looked up has been on that site. I love it!!
Oh, as for the which Kindle, I got the Kindle Wifi w/offers. Adds show up on the menu screen and screensaver. I thought it would bother me but they have some really good ads sometimes. There was one where you can get a Roku (Netflix streaming device) for 50% off. There were others I was interested in too. I actually really like it with the ads. The ads don't show up when you're reading. The cost is $114 for that one. $139 without ads and $189 for 3G and wifi. I dont; see a need for the 3G. I have so many books downloaded to my Kindle already I don't think I will need to buy one on the go.
