Framingham to Boston commute?
Does anyone regularly commute from Framingham to Boston? My H and I are looking at houses in the next few weekends and our REA suggested Framingham. I've lived near a T stop since I moved to Boston so I don't have much experience with the commuter rail.
Know anyone who regularly makes this commute? I work in Back Bay.
Re: Framingham to Boston commute?
I wouldn't want to do it, but I despise commuting. Plus, the commuter rail is pretty pricey from that far out.
Would you have to drive to the station and pay to park as well? Take the bus to/from the station and then have to be dependent on two public transportation schedules?
It's doable, but definitely wouldn't be my preference.
This. I guess it depends on your personal tolerance, but I would never commute from that far away into Boston.
You could drive to Riverside and take the green line in to Copley. Though it probably wouldn't save you $$, it would be less soul sucking than the commuter rail.
First off, I would recommend only looking at places north of Route 9...there are areas of Framingham that I wouldn't want to live in. We lived in Framingham for about 6 months then Natick for the past few years. Luckily our work was in Natick.
If you want to take the commuter rail in, I would suggest going to the Ashland or Natick stops, depending on which one is closer to where you live.
We now live in Grafton and drive to Natick for work, and I can say the traffic on 90 gets bad just as we are getting into the Framingham area and is that way, my guess, all the way into Boston.
Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions about the Framingham/Natick areas.
I personally do not make this commute, but I work with a few people who do. They are consistently late to work because of delayed trains, and I hear them comment (complain, really) about the Framingham line quite frequently. Also, you are a slave to the schedule, which, if you miss your train, can be really unfortunate.
Granted, I take the Blue like to work everyday, and it's no picnic either. However, until I win the lotto, public transportation it is.
This. I worked in the plaza next to the natick t stop for an insurance buisness....it wasnt that packed.....i did the worcester---->natick commute and that was a PITA but you'll learn back roads too.....if you can hit a t stop further in by taking backroads I've always found that to be easier.....good luck!

Been a while since I've posted, but I thought I would offer my two cents--
We own a home in Framingham {the North Framingham side, near Sudbury}, and we're about 10 minutes away from the pike entrance, 3-5 minutes from rt.9 and about 5-8 minutes from 495... it's amazing proximity to all major roads. I was working in Copely when we first bought and if you time it right, you can make it into the city in about 35 minutes. Seriously. You'll have to adjust your timeing though-- like not leaving the house at 7am to make it into the city by 8am, make it more like 6:30-6:45 and you'll be just fine it make it in there by 7:45am... but it's just a cost of living adjustment. You'll have to make it work for you.
The rails are great, but as pp mentioned, a little pricey from the Framingham area. Again, it's a cost of living adjustment so you'll have to make it work for you. By owning a home and commuting into the city, we can easily enjoy our 1/2 acre property {don't get excited, it's just a basic cape with 1 bathroom, but we make it cute, haha} and room for our Great Dane to romp around like an idiot gazelle.
Might want to consider a few things:
1) how much of a morning person are you? Thankfully Dunkins is all over...because you might need to get an early start if you're driving or taking the rail
2) do you have any commitments like a dog, child, etc? Might want to consider how far those obligations can be from you {we have a dog walker who is quite literally the most amazing person on the planet-- she takes pictures on her phone to send us almost every day. Sometimes Atticus is dressed up like a bear.. others it's a duck... and he loves every minute of it}
3) do you have a preference to which roads you take? you can easily snag rt9 into the city, just as easily as the pike-- but those are really your only two options from Back Bay if you're driving. I normally just went online to check out traffic reports before leaving work to make usre I didn't get hung up somewhere. Goes for the rail too.
Most importantly-- have fun! We were able to actually buy some property with our house which is slim pickin's out in this MA market {I'm from North Carolina, so believe me when I tell you that sticker shock knocked me on my a** when we were house hunting}. A commute is just a commute-- everyone has one even if they work from home and you'll learn to adjust your schedule accordingly.
I'll also mention quickly: in our neighborhood {a ton of capes} a TON of people work in the city or very very close to it.
I commute in from the Westboro stop into South Station each morning so I sort of regularly make this commute each morning. Depending on the train in, it's really not that packed. I take the train that leaves Worcester at 6:55 so it would hit Framingham at 7:40, and it's an express which is nice so you'd be in Bay Bay around 8:15. Being in Framingham, you have more train options than someone like me who has to wait for a Worcester train. There's a train home that leaves South Station at 5, 5:15, 5:35, 6:15 & 6:30 all stopping/ending in Framingham.
Yes, it's a little pricey but my company lets us get tickets taken out of our paychecks pre-tax. No idea what parking is like in Framingham though.
