This made me mad yesterday

And maybe I am just over-reacting, but I am still kind of steamed about it. DS and I were taking a walk around the neighborhood after dinner. He saw three kids on bikes (ages 7-9 I would guess) and started running toward them. Then one kid says loudly, in a mocking tone "oh look, a ginger" as he rides by.

WTF? It may be because I fvcking hate that term with a bloody passion, but I seriously wished that kid would fall on his face and knock out a couple teeth. I think the part that makes me really upset is thinking of when Sean gets older and kids would not want to play with him because of his hair color, or something stupid. Luckily, now he is too little to even get it. It just made me realize that if my kid ever gets bullied, I am not going to react well to it and will probably end up going postal on the kids or their parents.

Re: This made me mad yesterday

  • Oh that would have broken my heart.  John was watching boys of a similar age outside and waved to them (he waves to everything, cars, dogs, etc) and one of them said in a mocking tone as well "oh look a baaaaby." It broke my heart, you never want anyone to be mean to your kid.

It's weird though, how would a 7-9 year old know that term?  I guess I don't understand b/c I ALWAYS wanted red hair growing up, like my grandmother had.  I'm like you though I can see myself going BSC on some kids and parents in the future if anyone messes with my kids.

  • seriously, I blame South Park for the "kick a ginger" episode. I never heard it til then.

  • oh that is so sad.  Kids can be such @sses sometimes.

  • That is horrible. I would've gone off on the kid. I don't get where a kid that age would know that term either and what the heck is wrong with having red hair anyway?????
  • wait?  what?  Is "ginger" a slur?

I got teased for being a redhead as a kid.

people use it in a derogatory manner, yes. But I have also heard redheads describe themselves as gingers, so its kind of strange. Anyway, I hate hate hate the term. And FTR, I never got teased for having red hair as a kid, maybe that is why this is so foreign to me.

  • Until maybe a couple years ago, I *never* knew that having red hair was something that kids got made fun of for! And one of my closest friends since 3rd grade is a "ginger" and I don't recall kids making fun of her for it. Kids can be really, really mean though. Just wait till they're middle school aged. I vividly remember being shunned by my group of friends one day, simply because they felt like it. I was back in the fold a few weeks later and another poor girl was on the outs.

  • There was also a recent Episode of Glee where Ms. Pillsbury referred to herself as a "ginger". They were doing a sort of Woe is me episode that they all had a t-shirt made with something they didnt like about themselves. Mr. Schue wanted hers to be about her OCD but instead she had it made to say Ginger.

I have a cousin that has "orange/red" hair and i dont think he was ever made fun of because of it but i can't be sure. My DH LOVES redheads! I always ask him why he is with me then cause my hair is dark blond to light brown! lol

  • We were watching The Sixth Sense the other night and there's a scene where Cole's mom thinks he is being bullied so she calls the other kid's mom. DH said that if he finds out his kid is being bullied, he won't be that calm. I can only imagine how heartbreaking that must have been.

It's really sad because there is nothing you can do to protect your kid from being teased. I was teased for being overweight, my sister for having terrible teeth and glasses, and DH for being Asian. It's so sad.

Is "Ginger" less derogatory in the UK? I feel like I've read/heard it in British shows/books frequently.

I think it is a pretty common term over there, but I unsure of the context of how they use it.

I remember reading it in Harry Potter. That may have been the first time I heard the term.

  • My jaw dropped when I read that.  I'd be spitting mad but the worst thing is that you know he'll hear this in the future.
  • Wow, I must be really ot of it because I'v never heard of a red-head being called a "ginger" before.  That really stinks though!  That's one of biggest worries about my kids entering school, being bullied.  Kid's can be so mean.  I'm so sorry.

FWIW It looks like your son has absolutely beautiful hair!

  • The teasing kids about being redheaded is so weird to me, but it's been around for an awfully long time so we can't blame it all on South Park.  Red hair used to be a mark of the devil.  And am I the only one who's heard the term "red-headed step-child" used to describe somebody that gets the fuzzy end of the lollipop on a regular basis?  As in, "Man, our office is really the red-headed step-child of the company.  Why do we always get the crappy handmedown computers??"

My BIL is a red-head, calls himself a ginger, and my sister regularly talks about how much she hopes their daughter turns out to be a ginger-baby.  (she's still bald.  Her peach-fuzz might be red, but it's still too thin to really tell)

My mom actually refers to redheads (specifically pale, freckly redheads) as paste-eaters.  But that's a family joke - and she doesn't actually mean it in a derogatory sense, and doesn't really use it outside family gatherings.

  • I am sorry that this happened to Sean and I am glad that he isn't old enough to understand what happened yet.

I've been tortured by other kids for my red hair my entire life, including by my own sister and cousing who used to chant, "I'd rather be dead than have red on my head."  I used to cry and cry.

As an adult my sister admitted that she was jealous because strangers used to stop our mom and tell her how pretty my hair was.  Unfortunately this admission came WAY too late.  My years of teen angst were far behind me at that point.

As for the term Ginger...  I have 2 comments

    1. my canadian sister in law uses the term all the time and it doesn't have a negative association it would vbe like calling someone a "blonde" or a "brunette" instead of yellow haired or brown haired.

    2. This is exactly why kids shouldn't watch South Park.  The whole point of the Ginger episode is about how it is wrong to judge people for things that are superficial. If you watched that episode and seriously came away from it with the idea that "gingers are bad" then you weren't paying attention.

Cartman is a racist, manipulative, bully, jerk.  Its a characture to make a point.  He is often the protagonist in the episodes that have to do with racism and intolerance.  It's a recurring theme in the show and Cartman is always made to look like the fool.

  • I've never heard the term "ginger."  Kids are so darn cruel.  I have already told DH that he'll have to hold me back if someone is ever picking on Aiden or Claire.

I had a friend who used to say this- IN COLLEGE.  And wouldn't you know it, her first born child, a boy, has red hair!
