Same-sex marriage amendment - recent story

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2011/05/20/vote-on-same-sex-marriage-less-certain-after-appearance-by-anti-gay-pastor/

Basic gist: Rep. Leidiger invited Pastor Bradlee Dean to say a prayer at the start of the day.  Dean is vehemently anti-gay anything.  Rep. Leidiger claims he didn't know the pastor is controversial. House members on both sides are upset that this guy was invited and the vote is looking less likely for today.

My question:  If you're inviting someone to speak, pray, whatever, don't you at a minimum do a google search to see what you can find out about the person?   It took me less than 5 minutes to see what he's about and that the Senator and the Pastor are both involved with the Tea Party.  Does the Rep. really think average people are stupid enough to believe he didn't know?

Re: Same-sex marriage amendment - recent story

  • First. Whoah whoah whoah.  There is a "House prayer"?  That's my first problem.  Religious anything should not be present in any government forum.  Do they pray to god/God?  (I'm especially bristle-y about that after all of this religious hullaballoo with my friend via e-mail...)

Second, of COURSE he knew.  Leidiger is painting himself to be a big huge idiot if he says he didn't know.  Pleading ignorance often = looking like a major tool.

This was the pastor said during his prayer and I know you'll just love it.

"I know this is a non-denominational prayer in this chamber, it's not about the Baptists, it's not about the Catholics alone, or the Lutherans or the Wesleyans or the Presbyterians or Evangelicals but rather the head of the denomination, and his name is Jesus ? as every president up until 2008 has acknowledged, and we pray it in Jesus' name," Dean said.

Apparently he missed the definition of non-denominational.

Yeah, there's that too. I'm surprised he's not advocating to amend the U.S. constitution so only Christians can be president.

  • Oooooh....Gallup poll shows majority favoring equal marriage for first time ever!  (Is the Gallup poll legit?  I'm not sure.  I've heard of it but that doesn't always mean anything because I've heard of the National Enquirer as well.)

    WE'RE GETTING THERE!  Yes

  • I think that he should have known. But I don't think he actually did. I believe he completely failed to do any due diligence on this guy.
