C25K questions

So, I'm thinking about getting started running. I've never run before (at least not since I was a very young kid) but I need some activity and I hate the gym.

So, I know a bunch of people on here have used the program. I'm curious which website/app you used, if you liked it (I think most of you did, but I'd like to hear if you didn't too). Just general information about the program, I guess. All I know is it gets people running gradually, but aside from that, I'm clueless about the program. What do you run to? Does the program have songs or music you run to or is it just a website?

I know from when I was doing the 3-Day that shoes are very important, and I have a good pair of shoes.

Any info you are willing to share would be great. Thanks ladies. :)

  • The first time I did it I used Robert Ullrey's podcasts.  The music is generic techno-ish music which I don't love but the beats are just the right tempo for running/walking. 

    The first day was hard.  Running one minute straight was tough for me.  The best advice I can give is STICK WITH IT!!!  It will get easier every time you do it!!  Push yourself and you can do it!!  There were a couple weeks I got really busy and didn't run much so I would sometimes repeat a day. It really is a great program!  I slacked off over the winter and am now restarting it in the middle.  I ran 16 minutes without stopped the other night!  That is HUGE for me. 

    YOU CAN DO EET!  :-)

    eta:  I got in the habit of counting breaths.  1 (in) 2 (out) up to 20 and then start over.  It somehow made the time go faster.  When you get going, 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes etc. will feel extruciatingly LONG but it will get better, I promise!! :-)

  • Ditto Robert Ullrey's stuff. I REALLY liked his pacing, but I REALLY hated the music, like a lot. BUT...his cues help a lot. Eventually I got up to running it twice in a row...but given my pace and stride I'm sure it wasn't exactly 10K...but still, I was impressed with myself, lol.
  • I've really been wanting to do this too.  I'm totally not a runner, but I used to be...a long time agoEmbarrassed  Everyone I know who runs loves it,  so I'm pretty sure I'm missing out on something good by always saying "I'm not a runner" and not even trying.  I'm curious what others have to say about it.

  • I have run in the past, but due to some injuries I stopped.  Thanks to the ladies on here talking about it, I started doing the C25K 5 weeks ago.   I use this website http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml for my training info.

    It's going really well.  I already had good running shoes and a heart rate monitor so all I had to do was start the program.  

    I just discovered http://www.kissmyblackass.org/podcasts/couch-to-5k/ for my music.  She tells you when to run and walk. 

    One of my clients is a running coach and here is some advice he shared with me...

    * Be patient.  Getting ready for a race of any distance is challenging - especially if you're new to running.  Even when you have to trudge through a workout on occasion, after your workout you'll always be happy that you got it in, and it will pay BIG dividends on race day.  Think long term.

    * Make getting in your run your priority for each day.  When things get busy it's too easy to let the day's run slip, and think you'll do it the next day.  Don't let it be a choice.

    * If you ever get bored with your running, find ways to make it more interesting.  Go to a park or the river or someplace you haven't been before where you can soak in the scenery as you get in your workout.

    * Make sure you have good shoes that are right for your foot (the shoe type you will need varies by your stride and foot type).  This is probably the most common problem among beginning runners.  Good stores will be able to fit you well.  Shoes should only be worn for ~400 miles.  And shoes that are wrong for your foot or have too many miles on them could lead to injury, so that's something just to keep an eye on.

  • I did it with an old iPod shuffle that didn't have the capability to play podcasts, so I made my own playlists using my iTunes library. I used the Cool Runnings schedule, and created playlists that the correct length songs for the walking and running segments. I knew it was time to switch when the music changed.
     
    My biggest tip is to run much slower than you think you need to when you're starting.

    Yes!  I agree!  At times I was barely faster than a speed walk.  I know I'll never win a race so I take it easy and what feels good for me.

  • I did C25K many years ago and used it to prepare for my first 5K ever. Don't be afraid to repeat weeks or carry over some workouts from previous weeks, sometimes you might not be ready to go to the next week's workout right away, and sometimes you'll surprise yourself and be ready when you're not so sure you are. I know I repeated a couple of weeks in the program about half way through and more towards the end.

  • I did this program over a year ago.  I didn't use any podcasts and just really picked music I liked.  A good website for music ideas (based on how fast you run/walk) is www.jog.fm

    Make sure your shoes are good for running.  The first thing I did was go to a running store to be fitted for proper running shoes.  I'm so glad I did.  Good luck and if you want more info on th the C25K program head over to the Health and Fitness boards.  There are lots of running ladies over there and many have done the C25K program.
