How much does daycare cost?

No kids, and not TTC yet, but I wanted to start getting a more realistic cost of things. How much does full-time daycare for a newborn cost? At what age does it go down, and by how much?

Re: How much does daycare cost?

  • It depends on whether you go to an in home provider or a center.  The range of prices we have seen/paid for an in home is anywhere from $150-180 and the price was the same no matter the age of the child.

  • From in-home to center I saw prices range from $125-220 for a newborn.  Per week.

In some places it dropped after 2 (sometimes 3) years. And by dropped I mean $20-30.

  • I'm in Texas, so my numbers might be a little different.  We take both of our girls to a Montessori, full time.  For the infant room, its $925/month.  At 12 months, they move to the pre-toddler room and it drops to $890/month.  At 18 months, they move to the toddler room and its $870/month.  We do get a small discount because we have 2 there.

We have to provide all diapers and wipes.  In the infant room, we provide all food.  Once they move to the pre-toddler and toddler room, we can pay for meals.  Its $2.41/day for breakfast, lunch and 2-3 snacks, depending on what time we pick up.  We can pick and choose what days we want her to have school lunch, so we don't have to pay when she isn't there (like when we go on vacation, etc).

  • We got to a daycare center instead of an in-home.. They range $175-$240/week in Des Moines for an infant and its basically that price until they turn 2.. then it might go down like $20/week.. When we used to go to an in-home it was $150/week no matter what age..

  • Also, I think it's what side of town you're on. My friend takes her little boy to a NE side in-home, and it's only $105, I live on the SW side, and our daycare is $130- in-home. My Friend is opening an in-home, and is charging $135 in P-Hill.

There is a center by my house and it's like $165 a week. I'm 99%sure my in-home will always charge $130wk no matter her age. And I think at age 2.5/3 we'll move her to a more 'school' type atmosphere.

OH! And because my H and I get paid on the same week, bi-weekly, my lady allows us to pay $260 on our pay weeks. which helps us A LOT!

  • We paid $816/month until age 2 at a center. We also provided our own food and diapers.

  • We pay $135/week for an in-home daycare.  We provide diapers, wipes, formula and baby food.

  • Thanks for all the responses! I'm glad to know I wasn't too far off. I was thinking about $130 a week as the low end but had no idea of the range.

  • We live in SW Iowa and will pay $105 for full-time care at an inhome daycare. The rates don't change until the children are in school and then it's based on before or after care or before and after care. There is the option for part-time rates, but then your days are selected for you, based on avaliability.

We will only need to provide our own diapers, change of clothing/season appropriate clothing, and BM.

She provides most types of formula if we need it, but some of the speciality ones are not provided. Nutritious, homemade meals are served (breakfast, lunch snack); even the baby food is homemade.

Unless there is inclement weather, they have playtime outside everyday.

No TV except for maybe 5 hours a month and then it's educational; they have signing videos they enojy.

There are 2 providers so they are able to do field trips (library, grocery store, park, etc - no fun places like the Science Center here!).

Once a month, they host a family night where all the families have a chance to hang out, eat and enjoy a family-friendly activity. Next month (our first family night), the Blank Park Zoo will be visiting!

I know that's way more than you asked for, but you want to know what you are getting with your money as well.

  • Thanks, Sept! It's nice to have the add'l info!
