Recommend your...

...hair straightener!

I currently have the original Chi:

I just spent the last 45 minutes trying to get my hair close to straight for this wedding today and I swear it's all been in vain.

Ever since I had Sami it just doesn't work anymore.  Between my hair getting thicker, coarser, and dryer, I am THIS close to just saying screw it and getting a Keratin straightening treatment, but please, talk me off the ledge...

I need a straighener that can handle a lot of hair at a time, and maybe even one that can handle both wet and dry hair would work.

So, if you would be so kind, pics and/or links to your go-to would be much appreciated!

Re: Recommend your...

  • I gave up on a flat iron years ago, I HATED what it did to my hair, so damaging!  I can actually straighten my hair in less time (and less damage) with a round brush and a good blow dryer, after using the Paul Mitchel Super Skinny shampoo, conditioner, and serum.

I don't straighten on a daily basis (only a few times a year) because I'm lazy like that, but I can usualyl get it done start to finish in under 30 minutes.

I'm sure that's not the recommendation you're looking for, but figured I'd put my 2 cents in.  FWIW, when I was using flat irons, the original Chi was the best I had found.

  • I have the Bedhead brand. I got it from Kohl's for $30. It goes up to 400 degrees and works great. I actually can't imagine anything else working better. I am able to run it through my hair for a stick-straight look for under 2 minutes. However, that being said, You have much thicker hair than I do so it might take you a little linger to get the results you want.
  • This is the best straightener I've found: Remington Wet2Dry 2" ceramic

    It won't PIP, but here's a link.

For some reason the only straighteners that seem to work for me are the wet/dry ones. It releases steam as you straighten so it doesn't do as much damage to your hair as a regular flat iron. My first wet/dry was from AVON, but they don't make them anymore, so I had to search for a new one. The Remington works really well. And if your hair is dry and you need to touch up, the lower heat settings work fine.

With the flat irons that required dry hair, it took me almost 2 hours to straighten my hair. With the wet/dry it takes me about 20 minutes.

  • I have very thick, very wavy hair.  For the purposes of straightening, I've found the Rusk 2" straightener to be the best.  When I moved here I discovered I needed more because every time I straightened, I'd sweat and I'd have curls pop up around my head.  So, I started using straightening shampoo too (Straight Sexy Hair).  With the shampoo, I have straighter hair even without the blow dryer or straightening.  I highly recommend.

  • I have a Corioliss one that works pretty well.  It looks like the one you posted.

I second hair products like a straight shampoo, blowdry protecter, and a shine serum for straightening.  When I have time, I do it in sections and wear shorts and a t-shirt so i don't get too hot.

For wet to dry, I have that instyler curling iron.  It worked when my hair was longer.  Now I honestly don't use it.  I burned myself with it once, so it scared me but that it probably more me than the straightener.

  • My top recommendation for a flat iron is this one (link)

It's awesome, in a nutshell.  I read it can do wet to dry but never tried it that way.  I always blowdry straight and then go back and touch up. I don't personally have this one at home, but I used it all the time when I was at work.  I have the Chi, like you, at home.  But if mine ever breaks down, this will be my replacement.

Ditto getting a good straightening/smoothing shampoo.  Use them for a couple weeks and you should notice a difference.  I really like Paul Mitchell's Smoothing Line. Overall, it's more reasonably priced compared to other salon products.  This shampoo works so well, actually, that I don't use it very often because it's too heavy for my hair... But I do have fine hair, it's not very thick, just really curly. And a big plus, but like most professional haircare products, it's color-safe.

If you do eventually decide to go the Keratin route, I can help you out with that.  Smile I had to sit through a class at work for it.  I also got it done twice before getting pg... it's not recommended to do while pg.  It's worth it.  It won't necessarily straighten your hair, and if the salon you're going to says it will, most likely it's the treatment that contains formaldehyde.  It will, though, reduce your curl about 60%, which is a lot (believe it or not)... I was able to blowdry my hair from wet/curly to smooth and straight in less than 10 mins compared to about a 20 min blowdry and 10 min flat iron. I could also let my hair air dry, and it would be almost straight and just had a very soft, pretty wave to it. The best part, your hair will feel sooooo good, you won't be able to stop touching it... and it won't frizz!

    It's pricey... but worth it.

  • I have a Paul Mitchell Ion Smooth. ( http://www.amazon.com/Paul-Mitchell-Protools-1-25-Professional/dp/B001UHN0NG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1306080521&sr=8-1 ) It's probably more than you want to pay, but it is SOOOO worth it. I have very, very thick, corse, curly hair and this does the trick. It warms up in about 30 secs. I never get static when I use it, and it has a huge range of temp settings. I've had it for about 3 years and have never had issues with it,  and I have dropped it quite a few times. I didn't purchase mine online, but through Facemakers (not sure if they have them out that way, but I'm sure Sally's Beauty Supply has them)
