how old should a child be before getting facebook?

i am up late fretting over my cat who is sick. she is the one with the heart problem. i am not sure if she is run of the mill sick, or heart failure sick. i called the vet and basically we are doing the watch and see thing. anyway i am trying to keep my mind off it so i thought i would do a post about something that came up a few months ago.

we have some family friends with two kids, 10 and 12. i was surprised to learn they have facebook. do you think that is too young? by the way i have no idea what their privacy settings are.

  • I think 12 is probably okay - I'm not sure how you'd really stop them when it's going to be such a "normal" thing for them now. 10 is probably pushing it, but may be okay if you do raise privacy and monitor their friends.

The good thing now is that all of the kids getting on Facebook now probably have parents on it and they can friend them and make them keep their posts visible to them.

  • My little brother who is 8 and my little sister who is 10 have a FB account. It drives me psycho. They mainly have it so they can play the games. I rarely see them on their so I don't know what kind of rules my dad and stepmom have established about it. I do know that they are not allowed to post any pics of themselves. Also the accounts are made in their nick names and not real names (not first or last).

What really annoys the crap out of me is that they are friend with me. Which is fine but do not expect me to censor myself on their account. My little sister told me one day that she isn't allowed to be friends with my brother b/c he writes bad words on his. No I am pretty conscientious about what I post in general. But if I feel like posting "Screw this day it! Fing sucked" I'm going to post it.

  • 13 - that's what FB's TOS lists, and that's what I think you should stick to.  I have a cousin who's little girls (under 10) have FB, and she constantly asks me to be friends with them.  I always say, no, not until they are 13.  But I may be a bit of a stick in the mud with this.  As a teacher, I know it opens up the way for so much drama and inappropriateness, even if they have it locked down.

  • I agree with Lauren, and think it should be 13 at the youngest.

But I really wonder how closely people are monitoring their kids posts.  My cousins who are even over 13 are constantly posting their cell phone numbers and other crap.  It just really makes me hesitant.  I had an 11 year old cousin make a FB account and I've noticed that she no longer has her account.  So I'm assuming that FB deleted it, cuz I can't see her getting rid of it.

This, but I have students who are 9-11, and they get around it by "changing their birth dates." Apparently, they all do it.  I don't usually become friends with students until they have graduated high school.  On a few occasions, I will friend a former student before that, but only if they are over 13.

  • i think the older the better, too. if FB says 13, then I would stick to my guns on that. besides making sure they're not too young (although i'd rather them get it at all) it also teaches them that rules are there to be followed. my mom was really a stickler for stuff like that and it taught me integrity. but honestly i wouldn't want them on it at all, even at 13. and the games thing...surely there are other places that have games? besides a social networking site for adults?
