Possibly moving to area and need advice......
I have a job interview for a company in Suffern. From the phone interview, I feel like I am perfect for the job and they are very motivated to have the position filled quickly. I would be relocating from Rochester, NY. My question is, where would be good places to live? I know the cost of living is much higher in the HV and I am single (I would rent and would like a place that accepts dogs). This is my first post graduate school job, so I think the salary is good, but have no idea the expenses associated with living in a HCOL area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Possibly moving to area and need advice......
Finding a rental that will take a dog can be challenging (I know from past experience), so start looking as soon as you know if you'll be moving down this way. Rockland county (where Suffern is), is slightly less expensive than Westchester, but still rough. There are a few larger apartment complexes around, and a lot of rentals in houses that have been converted to apartments. I think a one-bedroom place is bare minimum $1200 - 1500 a month.
Nyack is a great little town with lots of restaurants, shops and bars, but can be expensive to rent. Also, parking can be an issue and there is definitely a "bad" part of town, so you have to be careful. Avoid anything in Spring Valley, as it's not a very safe area (actually, avoid anything in the East Ramapo school district area).
You may be able to find some less expensive places in Orange County, but I am not very familiar with the area up there.
Check out craigslist and also search real estate websites for rentals (www.randrealty.com is a good one) -- a lot of private landlords list through local realtors and you have to pay the realtor a "finder's fee" (usually equal to one month's rent) -- although it sounds like a lot, it might be worth it to have a realtor do the legwork to find you a rental that will take a dog.
One of our Nesties, RachaelH, is a realtor and might be able to help you if you page her in a post.

Suffern is a nice little quaint town. I used to rent there. About 7 years ago rent for a one bedroom was about $700. Its probably up to about $900 or so now.
You'd want to stay away from Spring valley, Haverstraw (Bad area), New city (pricey), Tuxedo (pricey). Town likes Sloatsburg, Nanuet, Congers, Valley Cottage, Blauvelt, Garnerville, even Monroe or Woodbury in Orange would be cheaper but not far at all. Good luck

Definatly page Racheal H if your seriously going to start looking. She'll help you!
If you're going to be working in Suffern, you might also want to consider looking for an apartment in north NJ in addition to the places previously mentioned. There are a ton of condos in Mahwah (the town right next to Suffern in NJ) so I know that sometimes there are rentals available here too (I actually live in Mahwah but like the HV board bc I'm from Suffern, work in HV and live literally in walking distance of NY). If you're looking for a more social place to live near some bars or restaurants, I would recommend trying Nyack, NY and Ridgewood, NJ. Your commute from Ridgewood would only be about 15-20 minutes and Ridgewood has a great little downtown. Ramsey, NJ and Suffern both have restaurants and bars in their downtown areas too. As you're looking, feel free to ask any questions. Good luck!
Well, I'm only somewhat familiar with the Geneva area. Wine tasting is big in that area. There are also a lot of parks that are worth checking out. Cost of living in this area is great. It's going to be hard to make the move to a HCOL area.....
thanks Elf and Lisa for the shoutouts.
Let me know if you need help finding a rental in Rockland or Orange, I know both areas very well and can find you a place that will take the dog. I sent you my email address in a PM if you want me to conduct a search for you know to give you an idea of what you can get for your money, I'd be happy to help. You can always check www.randrentals.com as well
This area is only 15 minutes from Suffern and in most cases you will find more bang for your buck (compared to Rockland) with rentals and homes for purchase
Thanks for the reply! I'm hoping the interview scheduling will be done soon. I'm optimistic about the job based on my phone interview. I don't currently have a large dog, but have always wanted one so I'd like any place I move into to accept them. I've never worked with a broker before for finding an apartment. Do I make a wishlist of sorts? I'll be sure to contact you once I have more details! Thanks again!
