I thought we could say/play this. Where were you when you heard big news about something? It could be anything.... post it here!
Re: Where were you when...?
I remember a bunch of these...
I was in Cape Cod with my boyfriends family when I heard that Princess Diana died.
I was walking in the basement of UAlbany when I heard about the tower getting hit on 9/11 (after driving in that morning and noticing a very low flying plane overheard which turned out to be one of the planes).
I was driving home after a wine festival weekend in the finger lakes when I heard about the Crocodile hunter dying. I only remember this because I felt he was an idiot to approach a sting ray from behind.
I was on my parents back deck talking to my father when I heard that Michael Jackson died.
I was sitting in bed, watching the news, hoping to hear something about my former student, when I heard Bin Laden was killed.
I'm sure I could come up with plenty more....
I was in gym class when we heard about the first plane hitting the WTC on 9/11. A girl had told us about it during class but she was a consistent liar so no one believed her. About 15 minutes later, while changing, our principal announced it. Watched it the rest of the day in class. Still gives me goosebumps.
I was in the car with Jeff, my brother and 2 cousins when we heard about MJ dying via my cousin's facebook.
Bin Laden - Headed home from a hockey game and I was reading about it on twitter an hour before Obama even spoke or any other news outlets broke it.
Princess Diana - in my boyfriend's college apartment drinking coffee. I was 20, I think.
9/11 - just moved to Baltimore, MD, getting ready for work in the morning at my first big girl job.
Bin Laden - trying to watch the end of Apprentice in my bed.
I remember being in the dining hall in college when we heard about Columbine.
I was going to get a student to do a beginning of the year literacy screening and happened to walk by the office. My principal walked out and told me about the first plane hitting the WTC. We walked to the teacher's lounge together and turned on the tv there just after the second plane had hit.
I was in sixth grade and my teacher had brought in a tv so we could eat lunch and watch the shuttle launch when the Challenger exploded.
The challenger - watched it on tv in class.
OJ Simpson verdict - okay I know this isn't like all the others but it sticks out in my mind. I was in HS and everyone went to different classes that had tvs on.
Princess Diana - I was volunteering at a hospital. My mom called me and mentioned the accident. When I got home I turned on the news and a short time later she was pronounced dead.
WTC - I was sleeping. My boyfriend at the time woke me up to say a plane had hit one of the towers. I don't think I had class that day because I remember sitting on the couch just watching it all unfold.
MJ's death - I have no clue. I should remember this though, right? It was so recent. God I have the worst memory.
OBL - sitting on the couch reseraching vacation plans and watching late night news.
OJ Simpson verdict - 7th grade math class.
Princess Diana - I was at our camp up in the Adirondacks. We had no tv, so someone came over and told us.
WTC - Between classes at college. We all thought it was a freak accident and went on with class as normal. It was only after when we found out about the second plane and everything that had happened. Classes were canceled and I remember driving home to find out some news about my uncle (he was fine) and all the channels were set to that emergency alert. So creepy!!
MJ's death - In Walmart buying flowers. I kept hearing MJ's voice being mentioned, so I had to ask the cashier what was up.
OBL - I heard the news from Andy Cohen, watching Watch What Happens Live.
I wasn't in school yet, so I never heard of The Challenger until the Punky Brewster episode when she watches it on tv!
I think I was just in school for OJ, and don't remember for Diana. I do remember Columbine. I was in college. It was on 4-20, so a lot of people were partying. It was scary to have that come on and get shocked back into reality.
WTC -- At work on LI. Things got scary down there for a while. We ended up all going to donate blood and then go home. Not hearing planes or trains for days down there was eerie.
MJ's death -- I was actually in the ER because I was hyperventilating from something. That was fun...
OBL -- Was helping DH finish demo on the bathroom and turned the news on in the bedroom as background.
Columbine - I was on a bus for a school trip on our way to one of the disney parks
9/11 - At work as a pharmacy tech during college. Some lady that came in to pick up her script told us what happened with the first plane we turned on the radio and heard the rest. I didn't see any of it til I got home from work in the afternoon.
Michael Jackson - Was at work, one of the girls I worked with heard it on the news
osama - Was in the ER
OJ Verdict- I think it was 10th grade but I was in lunch I distinctly remember one kid shouting "he's not guilty"
Diana- I was at my aunt's house, we were just watching TV and wound up staying up really late watching all the coverage
9/11- I was working at a daycare my senior year of college. I was in one of the infant rooms and someone stopped by and said there was a bombing. We couldn't turn on any radios in the room since the boss didn't want to upset the kids. I couldn't wait to leave and listen on my ride home.
VaTech shooting- we had a snowday that day which was so weird for the middle of April. I had the TV on and the news came on. I couldn't stop watching all day.
MJ- I had been at my sister's house. We were talking about the two other famous people who had just died. My sister said I wonder who will be the third since things always happen in threes. I left, drove home, turned on the TV and sure enough there the news was.
Bin Laden- laying on my couch I checked my FB on my phone, saw a status update about getting Osama and turned in msnbc.
There were some big ones I missed!
Columbine - I was at home and my parents told me about it. We had a really nice open family discussion about what had happened (I was in 8th grade). There were lots of threats to follow but I really have a ton of respect (then and now) for the way my parents handled it, then and after. We had several scary things happen at school (threats, death lists, etc).
VA Tech - I was subbing in NY and Jeff was living in DC. I knew he was at a big VA college that same day for recruiting for his company. I freaked out and called him and couldn't get a hold of him for a bit. It was so scary! He wasn't on that campus (thank goodness) but was on another.
OJ verdict: 9th grade English class. My teacher was awesome and let us watch the verdict on TV.
Princess Diana: I had just come home from my boyfriends house and my Dad was awake watching the news. We watche dthe coverage together for a while.
9/11: I was actually still sleeping b/c I didn't have class until noon. DH called me and the phone woke me up. I immediately turned the news on and watched until I had to leave for class and called to talk to my Mom. I listened to the news on the radio in the car and we just talked about the news in my class. DH worked at our local airport at the time so it was really stressful. That night I went to watch DH play hockey and watched President Bush speak in the bar at the ice arena.
Bin Laden: The morning after the news officially broke. I always watch MSNBC in the mornings before work and that's the first thing I heard when I turned it one.
My water broke 14 years ago and gave birth to the best son ever..........
I was in the welfare center trying to sign up for public assistant.
