Need to get rid of a sofa but dont want to junk it - ideas?

We have an old sleeper sofa in our house that was left here by the previous owners. There's nothing wrong with it and it's clean, just an ugly pattern. I've tried giving it away on Freeshare and Craigslist, but no takers. I don't have the means to bring it anywhere, so I'm afraid our only option is going to be to put it out with junk garbage on Thursday morning. But I HATE to junk something that is perfectly usable!

Salvation Army & other organizations won't come get furniture unless you have at least 3 pieces to donate, which we don't.

Any other ideas?

Re: Need to get rid of a sofa but dont want to junk it - ideas?

  • How about Goodwill?  I don't think they have the requirement of donating at least 3 pieces.

  • Are there any homeless shelters or other organizations that might take it? Try posting it again and say it will be around until trash day. I know when I was looking to get rid of items I also looked at wanted ads and responded to a few of those.

  • Sometimes when you put stuff out in front of the house, random people will come and take it. I should know because certain members of family are these kinds of people...

  • Some local churches will accept good quality used furniture for use at the church.

Double check with your local Salvation Army - they came and picked up our couch and that was the only thing we were donating.
  • Do you have anything else to donate?  We just had the SA come and pick up a couch of ours along with a few bags and boxes of clothes and kitchen stuff.  I doubt they really need you to have three pieces of furniture.

  • You might have some relatives or friends that could benefit from that sofa bed. You could give it away instead of making it as junk. :)
  • Try Freecycle.org  depending on your schedule you'll be able to get rid of the couch in a day or two. I use it all the time to get rid of stuff I don't want anymore.  It amazes me what's one persons junk is another persons treasure.

  • Thanks to everyone for your input. We've already asked around to friends & family, and even posted it on a few bulletin boards at 3 local colleges. Freeshare, CL, Freecycle, etc... no bites. We live on a pretty quiet street, so even if i put it out with hopes that someone would claim it before bulk garbage day, nobody drives through here unless they live here.

I'm just so surprised that nobody wants it. It's an ugly pattern, but really, it's nothing a slipcover couldn't handle. LOL

I had an ugly couch from before DH and I got hitched. There is a youth organization out here that works with high school students and they're always looking for random furniture for the office and events they plan for the kids. They don't care how ugly it is. I don't know if there is anything like that by you or not but just a thought. Or check a local college, I bet a frat would take it lol

Try freecycle.org. You can put in your city to see if you have a group set up for your area. Basically its just a group of people from your community that send emails when they have something to offer for free. It's an alternative to throwing something out when it can be "freecycled" to someone else who wants/needs it.
