Is my poppy plant a goner?

DH admitted to me that he accidentally ran the lawn mower over my poppy plant.  My grandmother gave it to me, and we planted it this spring.  Im hoping it will still be ok...anyone know?

Re: Is my poppy plant a goner?

  • I'm sorry, that must be really upsetting. I just planted poppies for the first time this spring too, so I don't know much about them yet. I do know they go dormant once the weather heats up, so if it withers you might not want to give up all hope.

My husband has run over various plants that line the driveway (mostly canna) and they've come back. Also, the slugs ate my dahlias down to a nub last year and they still came up, so it might just depend on your plant's reserves.

Is there much left to the plant?

I have no idea what's left of it, I cant bring myself to look :(  He told me tonight, so Im going to have to check out the damage tomorrow in the daylight.  I really hope it will come back.

    Thank you for your encouragement!

  • Hopefully he had it on a higher setting (it's better for your lawn, fyi) and just got the top, Remember, the life of the plant is in the roots, as long as there's enough there for photosynthesis and it doesn't catch a disease or go into shock, it should be okay.

I personally would not give fertilizer. I've been told not to think of it as "plant food" but as a stimulant. You might mulch with some aged compost.

  • I don't think it's dead.  It may not bloom this year, but in our lawn mowing days, my brother and I took out several peonies on accident. And each fall, we were asked to weedeat/mow over them....they came back every year.

I checked out the damage, and it isnt too bad.  DH always cuts the grass with a higher setting, so I think that helped.  There is a lot of greenery left on it!

    Thanks so much!
