Ergo wearers - is it worth the $$?

I'm debating making the big purchase.  I stopped at Simply for Giggles and tried one on with Parker for about 10 minutes and he seemed to tolerate it fine.  I've used a mei-tai a handful of times, but I'm fearful of spending so much on the Ergo to end up either not using it enough or have him end up hate being in it.

Ladies that have one, when do you use yours?  The trip to the grocery store or longer outings?

If you have a different soft-structured carrier you like, feel free to chime in!

Re: Ergo wearers - is it worth the $$?

  • I have a beco butterfly II and I liked it better than the ergo. Baby gets more support and it's much, much easier and safer to do a back carry with it.

I wear my kid(s) everywhere. Making dinner with a clingy baby, the grocery store for sure because Ana unbuckles and scales the side of the cart, festivals, hiking, you name it.

  • I like my Ergo. DH and I wear our daughter a lot, around the house and when we're out and about (groceries, etc). She has never liked the swing/bouncy/etc, but was very content being worn, so I ended up with 5 different carriers because this was the only way to get anything done.

I also own the Boba, very similar to Ergo but with a foot strap (which I heard would be come in handy when they get older), and has higher weight limit. I wear my daughter in front for both carriers though; I can't seem to wear her on the back on my own (I would need my husband to help me set her up).

Check on babysteals, that's where I get my Ergo for $67.

  • I have the Ergo sport, and don't currently use it.  You could borrow it for a while before committing if you want.

  • I have the beco butterfly and its worth its weight in gold!  Grier hates her carseat and isn't big enough for the stroller yet (we have a travel system that I hate! lol!) When she's fussy, I put her in it and continue with whatever I was doing.

I like that you can take the carrier off and give it to someone else without having to take the baby out.

  • i would like to have had more use out of our ergo (i have the cocoa-colored organic one), but the times i brought it, it was hot outside and it was a cooler ride for everyone in the stroller.  i didn't use it around the house (preferred my moby), more when we were at the farmer's market or festival-type atmospheres.  my son is 2 and i'm hoping to squeeze a few more wears in.  i've found the ergo more difficult to use by yourself.  i would suggest attending one of those baby-wearing get togethers and find one that is a match for you and baby.  (i think holistic moms network has one???)

  • I bought an Ergo sport on babysteals.com for about $60. You can borrow it for a while to help you decide. I won't be needing mine for awhile!

  • I love the Ergo but ended up selling mine and getting a Patapum (which is great as well but cheaper)... I would definitely recommend borrowing one and seeing if you like it if you are worried about it being worth the $.
