My Japanese maple is dead

For some reason the damned thing has just chosen to do nothing this year.   None of my other plants or shrubs have any problem.

Thye question is: leave it and see what happens or take it out and replace it.

What is it you think you might see happen if you leave it? It's dead, right?

  • Japanese maples are very finicky and hard to keep alive in cold zones.  I'm sure that was an expensive lesson at $100+ a pop.  Remove it and move on to more hardy plants.

Maybe it went with the Rapture.

Yeah, I don't know whay I'd leave it.   I guess have the soil tested to make sure it's not verticillium.  No point in planting another if that's what it is.

  • Take it out now. Ours mostly died and I let Mr Mouse talk me into seeing what would happen. Now it's a sad, scraggly mess but Mr M has become attached to it like it's Charlie Brown's Xmas tree.

  • I know, PDX, my husband is pretty reluctant to let it go, too.   This is the second treet we've lost in a year (different are of year, different reasons) and we're just getting frrustrated.   The other was a Chinese dogwood that died within a month of planting.   Of course, i didn't buy the warranty on that one because we'd never lost  tree before and the Japanese maple is 3 years old so warranty would not apply anyways.

Back to the garden centre we go!

  • Ooof, sorry Sam. Does Canadaland have extension services? They might have a list of recommended landscape trees for your specific area.

  • The dogwood is still a bit of a mystery.   The bed was new, dug by landscapers and possibly not dug deep enough into the clay and topped with fresh soil.   I thought I was watering it enough, but the leaves dried right out.   However, sitting water in the bottom of the hole may have been the issue.

I'm having a hard time decising what to replace both with.  I have a finite idea of what I want my yard to look like, dammit, and both these trees are a big part of that.

LOL, your sinless plant is in a better place.

Soil test won't determine if the tree died from Verticillium wilt. You have to do tissue samples. However, Verticillium will cause color streaking in the growth rings that you might see if you slice open the tree trunk.

Tenth Anniversary 5000 Comments 500 Love Its Name Dropper

That stinks.  Sorry.  We inherited a Japanese Maple when we bought our house, and we absolutely love it.  It's like the golden child of our yard, and DH and I both adore it.  We keep it like a bonsai, with haircuts and trims and everything.  We would be heartbroken if that damn tree died.

I agree with PPs, though, if it's dead, take it out and let it go.  Maybe see if there is a master gardener extension in your area that could help you plan what plant to replace the two you lost? Good luck.
