Felicity's Birth Story (pips)

I got on quickly to write it in my blog before I completely spaced and forgot to. So I'm copying/pasting it for you ladies, with a picture!

Ok, so our beautiful baby girl was born 10 days before her due date. And this is her birth story...

On Tuesday, May 17th 2011, my discharge had changed into a watery clear fluid, so my OB told me to go to L&D for monitoring and to make sure that I wasn't leaking amniotic fluid. We went, and we're monitored for 2.5 hours. Luckily the test to see if my water bag had ruptured came back negative, the OB did an internal to make sure she could feel the membranes were intact (she did, and they were) and I was 30% effaced and about 1cm dilated. The internal was very uncomfortable, and I was sore the rest of the evening from it.

Wednesday morning I woke up to cramping, that was coming and going. I figured it was left over uncomfortableness from the internal the day before. When I went to go pee there was a big glob of pink mucous, again I figured it was a side effect from the internal. About an hour later I realized the cramps were coming and going about 10 minutes apart, and they were mild contractions. So I relaxed, put my feet up, and drank a lot of water - still thinking it was from the internal and they would go away. After a few hours, they were still consistently coming so Damian and I went for a walk to see what that did -- it did nothing, they kept on coming. That whole time they were coming 7-12minutes apart and were extremely uncomfortable but bearable.

Damian was scheduled to work that evening 3-10pm, and I had called into work that morning to let them know I was contracting and wasn't going to make it in to work my afternoon shift. By 9pm, my contractions were horrific, I mean - they hurt like nothing I've ever felt before. But they were still only coming 7-10 minutes apart. Not close enough for me to go into L&D. By midnight they we're 5-6 minutes apart and by 1am, they were 4-5 minutes apart, and nothing I did made the contractions feel better. We called my OB and headed to L&D around 1:30.

They monitored me for a bit, and told me that I was in fact contracting (uh, duh, the pain on my face should've told you that) and they moved me from a monitoring room into a delivery room. At that point when the nurse checked I was 3cm dilated and 90% effaced - mind you this was about 30 hours from when I was last checked. A few hours later (still no epidural, my choice) I hadn't progressed at all, and the contractions were getting further and further apart. My doctor started my on pitocin, and I was terrified my body wouldn't cooperate, and I would end up with a c-section. (I would, and still will, do whatever is necessary and best for my baby but I really didn't want a c-section!) Two hours later and I progressed from a 3cm, to an almost 4cm dilated, My doc said she'd call me a 4cm so I felt like I was getting somewhere, haha. At that point she broke my water and I opted to get the epidural. Best decision I ever made! (This was around 10am)

By 12 I was feeling a lot of pressure, but I was only 6cm - so they kept pushing my button for more epidural to hit my system so I wouldn't feel the uncomfortableness of the pressure. By 1pm, I told them I felt even more pressure than before and the doc checked me and I was 9cm, almost 10cm. So they sat me upright and had me labor down for an hour. 2pm rolled around and they had me start pushing - I pushed for a half hour and at 2:29pm my beautiful baby girl made her debut. She was perfect, with a head covered in dark hair. She made noise, but wasn't a huge crier. She weighed 7lbs 14.4oz, and was 19.75" long. She was (and is) perfectly pink, without a single scratch or blotch on her.

I am so in love. I didnt cry either, which amazed me. I thought for sure I was going to be a big blubber ball when she came out. We've been very lucky, she's had a fantastic latch from the start and breastfeeding has been an easy success - so far - minus my poor sore nips. My milk is officially in, and my bewbies are enormous! But I'm producing way too much milk right now, so as uncomfortable as it is at times, I'd rather have too much than too little.

I can't believe I'm a mommy!! And I had no idea I would love being one as much as I do, I'm getting teary just typing about it.

My overly happy baby girl!

  • So, so happy for you! She is just as cute as can be. I wouldn't count out red hair, I was born red and and it turned white blonde, and I had two nieces with super dark hair and they are both blonde now (one is more strawberry).

Thanks for posting your story, note to self epidurals are your friend (not that I thought otherwise LOl).

  • Congrats, Mar! She's beautiful :-)

and yes it's true, all that hair WILL fall out and it just might turn red!  z had really dark black hair and once it fell out and grew back in it was definitely a lot lighter and even has a reddish tint.
