Wanted: low lying colourful perennial

I plant groups of vinca every year in hot pink to add year-long colour to the garden but I'd prefer to replace them with a perennial this year.   I end up buying 3 flats and added to my hanging basket and container annual costs I end up spending a lot of money on what ends up being disposable decor.   I tried finding seeds and starting from home but couldn't find them

So, what I'd like is something no taller than 8 inches, with lots of brightly coloured flowers that last all summer.   I'd also like them to stay contained in a 10-12 inch radius

What do you mean by "all summer"?  Spring-fall?  Annuals flower all growing season.  Perennials don't.  Perennials also multiply and generally need to be divided.  They won't stay within a 12" radius without you tending to them.

Sounds like you should just stick with annuals.  12" of annuals can't really cost that much.

  • you could consider doing a mix of perennials...some spring bloomers (creeping phlox, mini-daffodil bulbs, mini-crested iris bulbs) & some summer bloomers (can't think about a low growing summer bloomer right now...) .  Or ones with interesting foliage (like heurchera...I just snip off their flower stalks).

that way you get new color all growing season w/ perennials.

Indeed. If all you need is 12" of color, buy a few annuals every year. Perennials do not bloom continuously. A very long-blooming perennial will bloom 2-3 months, tops, in my zone. Most bloom only a week or two.

  • Ah well.  Thanks anyways.

  • Even if you don't want to buy the plants, you can always buy vinca seeds. They start easily when direct sowed. Also, my experience with vinca is that I always get some sprouts the next year. I find them to be much like zinna, if you let them go to seed, you'll have volunteers the next year.

  • I looked for vinca seed EVERYWHERE and couldn't find any.  I'd love to start them from seed, they do so well.

  • Maybe look for annuals that are easy to start from seed or reseed easily? Alyssum comes to mind.

  • A little taller than you'd like, but these perform much as an annual does.

The mounds are about 6" tall with flowers on taller stems.
