For those who were watching the news - Saturday here in Kansas was a little radical. DH and I were watching a movie late that night when I received the phone call from my mom up in North KC that a tornado cell had just passed over Lenexa...where we lived...and that two more were shifting around us. No sooner did I get off the phone that our tornado sirens began to blare - as I'm sure Danie knows - this is usually cause for most midwesterners to head OUTSIDE to see what's going on. We have neighbors who just moved from Vermont on the top floor of our apartment complex, so I ran and woke them up and had them join us on the first floor to make sure they had appropriate cover. DH watched the news and the kids hung out with the pillows and blankets and the dog in the bathroom. The cells shifted around us for about 45 minutes until they finally dissipated and the storm headed eastbound.
1.5 hours west of us, those same cells touched down and took out Reading, KS, 20 homes, loads of injuries and (so far) one fatality. Yesterday, Joplin, MO was hit - the damage was so bad it demolished a WalMart and ripped a hospital to shreds and remnants of the building were found as far out as 40 miles from their location.
It never became real, to DH and I, until Saturday. Please keep those towns in your prayers this week. It's the end of May and we had close to 10 tornado spottings this weekend, alone, in the states of KS and MO...the saying around here goes, "If it starts early, it's going to end late." I can't say I'm truly excited for the summer weather to hit with the way things have been going - I hope you all had a less crazy weekend!
Re: What a crazy Saturday here!
Wow!! I heard about the MO tornado this morning. That's wonderful that your mom called you and you helped your neighbors out. I'm sure they appreciated it a lot not being from a tornado area.
Funny, I was watching Storm chasers on Saturday night . . . never watched the show before. Quite scary how devastating tornados can be and how fast it can happen. I will keep the towns and you guys in my T&Ps that there aren't more awful storms to deal with!

Jeni I was watching the news this morning and thought of you immediately when they were talking about Kansas. Sooo scary but I'm glad you're safe!
Yikes, that is so scary. Glad to hear that you are safe and sound.
That was very sweet of you to go get your neighbors. I am sure they were so scared!
I thought about you immediately when they mentioned Kansas. Glad to hear you are safe and that you helped out the family above you!
We had a few funnel/tornadoes in our area yesterday too, but nothing as bad as near Jeni!
Stay safe it's been a whirlwind of a spring!

I saw photos of Joplin on yahoo this morning. Home Depot, Wal Mart, hospital, SO many homes....just demolished. 89 people dead and that was this morning. My thoughts & prayers go out to all those families of people they lost and everyone who's lost their home. The tornadoes this year are just unbelievable. I hate to say it but with all this end-of-the-world talk I can't help but wonder with all these deadly storms going on.
I'm so glad you're safe. I am going to keep praying for this wrath of nature to stop!!!
