Need Drink Coaster Recommendations

We need some new drink coasters for our living room and I'm having trouble finding ones that meet my requirements. Here's what I'm looking for:

1. I want them to have some sort of catchment area so that they actually catch the water. We have some flat coasters now that I don't like because the water condenses on the glass, then runs onto the coaster, and then spills onto the table which to me defeats the purpose.

2. I don't want the coasters to stick to the glass when you lift the glass.

3. I want something that looks nice in a semi-formal living room (so not brightly colored rubber ones).

4. I'll pay $20 for a set of 6-8 but I don't really want to pay much more than that.

Anyone have any good recommendations?

Re: Need Drink Coaster Recommendations

  • My MIL has really nice silver ones.  They're like mini silver trays with a lip that catches the condensation... and they have felt underneath so it doesn't leave a mark on the table.  I can't remember where she got them, but I do remember they were like $50 for 4.... You might be able to find something cheaper, or possibly find the silver ones for cheap (or maybe even fake silver ones), and then add your own felt to the underside?
  • There are stone ones similar to what you're describing in the Khol's outdoor section right now.  They're tanish gray stone colored with a black (inset) ring to catch condensation and the feltish material on the bottom.  They have them in monograms and in plain black/tan design.  I bought them for my MIL for Mother's Day and they were $16 for 6 on sale.

  • If you can't find what you are looking for in stores, you may want to try Etsy. I've seen some cute ones there.  And I just want to comment that I feel nice coasters are one of the more difficult home items to find.  Hmmmm - maybe there is a business idea in there!
  • We have some stone ones at home - they don't have a lip to catch the condensation, but the absorb it somehow.  I think they're sandstone.  I love that they soak up a normal amount of liquid and don't vacuum themselves to the glass.  DH has had them forever, so I don't know where they came from.  I looked for "stone coaster" on Amazon and a variety show up, though slightly above your price point ($15-20 for four).

  • i think what pp referred to (sandstone that absorbs moisture) is thirstystone. we have a set of monogram ones we got as a wedding gift from bed bath and beyond. there's no lip but it has a cork backing to protect your table, and they have a ton of designs that aren't bright and flashy.

  • yes, you definitely want sandstone coasters. they absorb the condensation, and are pretty durable.

they usually have them at Bed, Bath & Beyond...but I'm sure amazon has some.

  • Thanks everyone for the info. I read about Sandstone in some reviews on Amazon but I didn't realize that it actually absorbs the moisture somehow (because I noticed that the sandstone ones I saw didn't have a place to catch the water). I'll check out some of the options you suggested.

Haha, you know me too well! Amazon mom has me hooked on their 2-day shipping like a drug addict.

  • We also have the Thirstystone monogrammed ones, and they work well.
