Re: Refrigerators - Advice, Poll, Info Needed

  • We have a frigidaire side by side that came with the house.  I'm  not a fan.  With the sbs, it seems like all the shelves are long and narrow.  I lose things in the back and have to unload everything to get to them.  I do like having a built in ice maker and having the dispenser through the door is nice (although getting just a couple ice cubes is almost impossible)...I never had a maker or dispenser growing up and I really like it.

My particular freezer also has a problem with the shelves coming out of their pegs.  I don't know what that's about but the collapsing shelves are annoying.  The bottom basket also doesn't slide well.  Don't know if it's broken or what.

My mom has a bottom freezer and I really like the drawer.  I like that there are 2 baskets so you can't load stuff too deep to see what you've got.

  • We have this:

I love the freezer on the bottom, and I love that the freezer pulls out, not opens out (it's a drawer, rather than a door).  I love that if you leave a door open, it beeps at you so you know you didn't push it closed all the way.

I hate that we got white when we were in our rental, thinking it'd be what would most likely go best when we bought a house - and all our houses appliances are black.  I hate that it doesn't close super easily...you have to push it (hence the alarm beeps if you leave it open being kind of critical).  And I hate that we've had it for about 3 years, and the rubber seal at the top has started to tear.  I also really did not want ice/water on the front of the fridge (just don't like the look) but I get annoyed with our ice maker b/c it's easy to drop ice down the back fo the freezer and it leaves pools of water under/directly in front of the freezer...but this is mostly due to a husband who doesn't pick up the ice he drops Stick out tongue

I would recommend it...I have scoured the internet for bad reviews of the tearing thing, and no one else has experienced that, so that makes me think it's our fault, not the fridge itself.  And it's not creating a problem with sealing or anything...just annoying *looking* to me.  And again, I absolutely LOVE my freezer drawer with pull out wire basket, etc.  I would never go for refrigerator arrangment again (the top french doors are cool, but I could handle a one door top again okay...just never again a door freezer or a top freezer...I just love our bottom pull-out freezer SO SO much).

  • We have a MaytagIce2O MFI2269VEA. We bought it a year ago from AJ Madison (had it shipped all the way from New York, because even with shipping it was cheaper than any other option we found!) We definitely like it. It had great reviews when I was researching a year and a half ago. We were also somewhat limited in our choices because we needed a fridge that fit in a narrow space.

    A few things to consider:

    - Ours has a slide out drawer on the bottom of the fridge portion. I'd HIGHLY recommend getting one that will slide out even if your doors aren't fully open. We looked at many that had a similar slide out drawer, but had bins on the fridge doors that prevented that drawer from sliding out unless the doors were open all the way (parallel with the wall).

    - The freezer has two levels of baskets, with two baskets on each level (plastic, not wire -- which I consider a plus). The baskets can slide back and forth independently. This definitely helps with finding stuff, as nothing gets buried too deeply.Keep in mind that you will not be able to store anything super wide in this freezer because of the baskets.

    - Many ice makers will occasionally make some noise (you'll hear the water and/or the ice dropping). We don't notice it with ours that often, and we've gotten used to it so we pretty much tune it out. It's not excessively loud. But, read reviews -- some refrigerators are known to have super noisy ice makers.

    -  The ice maker also takes up a chunk of space in the fridge. It's not ideal, but there are different configurations with different fridges, so you may want to consider that.

  • Oooh..thanks for posting - we need a fridge for our new place.

We have a SBS in our rental and I hate it. It is too narrow and we often have a hard time getting things in (especially platters/wide bowls, etc. especially when getting ready for a party or something). It just feels small. Like BB said, it's hard to get stuff from the back and I really can't keep my freezer organize at all.

Do you have a side-by-side, bottom freezer, top freezer, etc? we have this one, a bottom freezer with french doors http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+25.8+Cu.+Ft.+French+Door+Refrigerator+with+Thru-the-Door+Ice+and+Water+-+Stainless-Steel/9510004.p?id=1218116794406&skuId=9510004

What do you love about it? I love just about everything about it!

What do you hate? The only thing that really annoys me is that the angle of the water dispener angle wont allow me to refill a waterbottle.

    Would you recommend? highly

Why/Why not? In order for a bottom freezer to work, I think the owner has to be very organized. It's very easy to just stack stuff ontop of other stuff

  • Do you have a side-by-side, bottom freezer, top freezer, etc?

    We have a SBS.

What do you love about it?

I feel like it fits more stuff than our old top freezer.  I like the ice maker and water dispenser on the door.  I like that the doors are smaller so that when you open them, you don't need such a wide clearance.

    What do you hate?

Nothing really.  I know some folks feel like their SBS is too narrow, but I haven't had issues fitting things in.  We can fit a large delivery pizza box in the fridge and a large frozen pizza in the freezer.  There isn't anything wider we've tried to store.

    Would you recommend?

    Yep.

    Why/Why not?

    It works well!

Although, I really, really want one of those glass door Subzero fridges.  I love the look and would love to not have to open the fridge door to browse.  And I don't really care that guests could see into my fridge.  But they're really expensive...

we rent, so we're stuck with a side by side.  i hate it.  i have always hated side by sides.  there are always things that you just can't fit, which is esp aggravating around the holidays if you do a lot of cooking/baking.  same with the freezer (esp with the freezer).  they might have the same amount of space as a regular door fridge but the way they are laid out sucks.  i've lived in places w/ big sbs and small sbs and they all sucked.

i've never had a french door so can't comment.  i tend to like just a regular door.  i've had the freezer on the top and bottom.  i think i prefer the freezer on the top.

  • I grew up with a classic top/bottom one, then had a side by side in a rental for 4 years, and now have a fridge top/freezer bottom one.

Side by side is my definite preference - it's easier to keep things organized with more shelves and both fridge and freezer items get some price eye level space. This is the only kind I will buy going forward, even though I know it costs more and is probably slightly less energy efficient.

  • Top freezer, Frigidaire#LHFT11780, 18cu feet, bought it at Lowe's.We did not get the auto ice maker since we have extremely hard water and no water softener nor did we want to take a chance with having a water dispenser.

What we love - since our kitchen is set up a little weird, this fits into the little space nicely. The price was under $900 too, which was within our budget.

Hate - it's black and gets dusty - but the rest of our appliances are black too so I didn't want to get a white fridge and DH didn't like the stainless steel version.

So far, I would recommend it, Lowe's delivery was awesome and they were on time.

  • Thank you all for the great info....lots to consider and you have given me wonderful food for thought. =)
  • We have a Samsung side-by-side. It's counter-depth (so the cubic footage isn't too large). I prefer it to the type with a drawer on the bottom because I've found those to be very awkward for me to access. Our freezer is pretty narrow, but it fits our needs. The shelves on the fridge are pretty easily adjusted. It's fine, probably the best fit for our space.
