WWYD: Husband attempting cooking?

So my husband volunteered to cook me something on my birthday. This is BIG news, as I can count on one hand the number of times he's cooked something since I've known him (not counting eggs and microwaving).

I need ideas on what to have him cook. I'm so excited about it I can't decide. I'm gonna go ahead and say that calories don't matter here. He has mostly all day to make it, but I'm thinking it might be best if it's something he can pop in the oven before I get home, rather than cooking right before I get home and worrying about timing. I like pasta and cheese. :D

Any ideas are appreciated.

Bonus question: What you have your husband make for you?

pretty much the only thing drew makes for me (besides burgers and other grilled stuff) is stir fry, which is easy.  and if you have a rice cooker he can make the rice well ahead of time.

  • Drew's made me stew and omelets mostly. I think maybe he's made pasta, too. Something like this would be good and easy: http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1835,151184-227195,00.html
  • The first thing DH ever cooked for me was his famous lasagna.  Wait, or it might've been his famous spaghetti.  Anyway, same basic idea.  Lasagna's a good one b/c, although it may take a good investment of time to put everything together, it's pretty easy overall.  And this way he can spend all day making it and then just put it in the oven as you requested.  ;)
  • My husband is more of a baker and he baked a cheesecake for my birthday a few years ago. It was divine.

He cooks as well and he makes a baked macaroni and cheese that is out of this world...I need for him to make that again.

  • If he's an inexperienced cook, I'd probably just let him pick out whatever he was comfortable with. If he wants ideas... a gourmet mac and cheese of some sort sounds good  :)

My DH doesn't cook much, but he's good at fajitas, your basic Indian curry, and egg dishes. A couple of months back, he also made some impressive-looking lamb for himself and a couple of dinner guests (they all said it was good.)

  • Mine's cooked twice in the three years that we've known each other. He tried cooking spaghetti and he did good with that but became a nervous wreck when the sauce started to splatter (he just needed to turn the burner down a bit). If he doesn't cook much, I would try to find something easy to make; mine gets nervous when there are a lot of steps and ingredients.

  • My DH does all the cooking in our house. I am spoiled. If he didn't, I would have him do something italian. It is easy and my favorite. :-D

  • Mmm, mac and cheese. All my dh ever makes is eggs (well, he counts baking fake chick patties and boiling broccoli too).
