wilton cake decorating class?
anyone take one?
i have a lofty goal of making ava a barbie dress birthday cake (saw it for $55 at shoprite in ramsey, and I'm accustomed to the $20 sheet cake from costco) but i have never ever decorated any baked good past tossing some sprinkles on already iced goodies.
is it worth the time and $?
Re: wilton cake decorating class?
I haven't but good luck! I looked a lot into stuff like that before K's birthday to do a cake for her.
Also, there's a place in New Windsor I would look into, I think its called Mountain Restaurant Supply or something. They do a ton of class, so do most of the community colleges (not for credit). And maybe cheaper!
i signed up for one. went to the first class. never went back. it was fine and all BUT you have to bring a cake to the class with you every week and usually 2. one that you decorated as "homework" and one that you will decorate with you in class. you can do both as half cakes so it isnt a ton of baking. but i was living in queens and this was an almost impossible task to get from work to home and to michaels with 2 cakes on the subway or in taxi by the time the class started at 7pm. i probably coulda tried harder, but i got engaged after the first class and lost interest. my SIL is taking the class now and she likes it. i think it's good if you want to learn how to do stuff in fondant, but i think you could probably figure out how to decorate in buttercream yourself. also, a lot of the class is about getting you to buy stuff from their cake decorating aisle. i've made a bunch of kid cakes before for my nephews. i'd always just make a practice cake and my family would eat it before the big day.
good luck!
yeah - i think you tube videos might be able to help me. i don't think i have the time to bake weekly. i was considering ordering cakes from shoprite since it's pretty cheap and then i'd just pick it up and go...is that lazy or smart?!
i'll search you tube tonight and see what's what. i have one of those pastry bags and tops, but have no idea how to use them.
5 hours?! ok, so maybe it's worth the price tag i see on them!
maybe i can make a smallish one and then have a sheet cake too.
small like this:
i just don't want it to look like this:
