playing the waiting game

I had a 2nd round interview for a job that I love and I know I could really do well in last week (on my birthday!).  As I was leaving, the HR rep told me that she would be in touch by the end of the week...that was a week ago.

I sent my thank you emails to the people who interviewed me and then sent a follow up email to the HR rep on Monday asking about the position...and am now playing the waiting game.

I've come to terms with the fact that many people don't follow up with applicants even after meeting them in an interview to let them know they didn't get the job, but I didn't think this would happen with a 2nd round interview - that that's what's kept me hooked.

Both of the interviews went very well and felt good.  The other part of the story is this is a position at a university that just had their graduation ceremonies this week.  So their office could just have been busy with the week's activities and that's why they haven't gotten back to me...

I keep going back and forth...am I kidding myself by still having hope or do I still have a chance?  Also, have you ever heard of someone not following up after meeting with you twice in person?

I really don't like the waiting game!

Re: playing the waiting game

  • I am waiting right now too.  I interviewed with this firm awhile back and wasn't hired and never received any contact.  They called me last week and wanted me to come in for a different position so I went in on Tuesday and found out during that interview that it is normal for them to send a rejection letter and that they never sent me one the first time because they were holding onto me as a potential candidate for more difficult positions...

I was asked to send my references on Wednesday and I know they were contacted because I work with them currently so now I am waiting... impatiently.

Don't write them off yet - sometimes it takes longer than planned to make a decision.

  • Can you contact them?  If they were supposed to be back in touch with you a week ago, I'd recommend calling/emailing the person who interviewed you.

To answer your question, unfortunately, lots of times employers don't contact people who they've interviewed.  But yes, I think you still have a chance.

  • I'm in the exact same boat as you! Although mine was a first-round phone interview, I'm supposed to hear something this week about whether I'm going to the second round for a personal interview. This is also with a university & I really, really, really want the job....

They said it'd be the end of this week, possibly next week, before they get in touch. They had graduation on the 14th and summer school started today, so I know they're busy. I just can't stand waiting! :) Good luck to you & please keep us updated!
