How the hell do you buy a mattress?

DH and I are planning to buy a king sized mattress and we've become really frustrated with the process. It's just so freaking hard. For those of you who have done so recently, where did you buy yours?

We've checked out the different mattress stores in Mandarin (Mattress One, Mattress Firm, Mattress Giant) and we sort of have an idea of what we want, but it's so hard to tell. I've also done a little research and Sam's Club sells them on their website for much cheaper than any of the stores. Only problem is you can't test them out first (or at least I don't think the local Sam's has mattresses). I would just go find one I like and then look for it on the Sam's website but there are so many versions of the same mattress that it's almost impossible to try one out at one store and find it elsewhere. Has anyone bought a mattress from Sam's? Any other suggestions?

ETA: Now that I think about it I may have already posted something about this a while back but I can't really search well on my phone so I'm sorry if this is a repeat.

Re: How the hell do you buy a mattress?

  • We're currently looking at buying a mattress too and it's definitely a pain in the rear.  One tip that I'm really taking to heart is if you find a mattress you think you like, make sure to lay on it for about 30 minutes to make sure you still like it.

I know our Sam's Club does have mattresses in store that you can try out, so definitely check yours.

  • Sam's does have mattresses. I would also suggest checking out Beds Beds Beds on Beach. I'm pretty sure it's one of those places that gets the beds with a defect, but they have amazing prices. I'll take a miniscule rip in the fabric or a misplaced stitch for hundreds of dollars off. We bought a mattress from there about 6 years ago and it has held up amazingly well.

Not sure what your price point is either, but my Tempurpedic mattress has changed my life, and you can return it if you're not happy.

  • Sams off of 295 has mattresses. It has been 5 years since we bought our mattress, but we ended up buying it from Mattress Planet. We have been very happy with it.
  • we got our mattress and box spring at sams club. you can come lay in our bed if you want to test it out :) it's a serta pillowtop.

i got our guest bed mattress at mattress one, it was on the much cheaper side of mattresses, but works just fine.

  • I don't think I've ever put much thought into buying a mattress, to be honest.  DH and I have gone in to a mattress store, tested a few out and made a purchase.  We have an idea of what we like from previous mattresses and experiences at people's houses/guestrooms and hotels.  Also, I don't really recommend testing a mattress for half an hour at Mattress Giant...I think it's frowned upon there if it looks as though you've settled in for a nap. ;)

  • I bought a king a few months ago. A friend and I ate Chipotle, walked next door to a mattress store, I found one I liked, texted DH who said it had to be better than our queen POS so I bought it and it was delivered the next day. It's been great ever since. In conclusion, I'm no help.
  • We walked into a mattress store, laid on a bunch, and picked out the one we liked best that was in our price range.

  • I am no help either. My parents picked out our mattress as a wedding present for us.

This is probably my favorite response.

Thanks ladies. It's good to know that the Sam's off 295 has mattresses. I think that's probably what we'll do. Their regular prices are about $200-300 cheaper than the sale prices at the mattress stores.

Ditto this. We may have checked out a few stores, but we definitely didn't make it a complicated process.

I feel like it shouldn't be, but I've had back issues since I was 17 (exacerbated by a car accident when I was 22) so I'm afraid to buy a mattress and be really uncomfortable. It's an expensive purchase so I just don't want to end up stuck with something I hate.

Can you ask your doctor what type of mattress they recommend for your back (soft, hard, middle of the road, etc.) Or if you ever stay at hotels, do you remember waking up with a stiff or sore back from any particular type of mattress? For me, if I sleep on a hard mattress, I always wake up with lower back pain so for us, the softer, pillow top was necessary!

You're right it is a big/expensive purchase.  But considering the above and that you may have a significant health or well-being impact due to your mattress selection and the fact that you'll be sleeping on it every night for probably at least five years, it sounds like you should make sure you're investing in a good quality mattress that won't f up your back even more.  Even a $1k mattress over the course of a minimum of five years is $200 per year for something you'll be using every day for about 8 hours a day.  I agree with Ash about possibly asking a doctor, and making sure it's something you've tested out rather than the cheapest from Sam's Club.

I totally agree. Unfortunately I haven't been seeing a doctor regularly (since we've moved a good bit) for my back issues so I'm not sure how much they could tell me, but I will mention it to my primary care doctor. We're definitely not trying to buy the cheapest mattress out there, but I like a deal and I refuse to pay $300 more for the same mattress if I can buy it somewhere else cheaper. From what I can see on the Sam's website, Sam's has the same mattresses (or at least comparable quality) for significantly less.

I know I most likely need a pillow-top so that narrows it down but it's just hard to tell the difference between all of them. I'd love a Tempurpedic but I just don't know if we can afford one right now. I'm seriously considering it though.

Exactly. That's what I meant. It's a big purchase and you need to make sure that you love it, so when we found one we loved, we simply bought it. We visited a couple stores to see prices, but I didn't mess around with different models or versions of different beds. I wanted to make sure the bed I was testing out & loved was the exact one I'd be getting. I'm always up for saving some money, but to me, confidence in the mattress is more important. It's a worthy investment.

ETA: If you can be sure that the Sam's one is the exact same mattress I would definitely go that route too.

  • Ditto Madisen and clseale exactly. I feel like you're overthinking this. I like a good deal too, but you obviously want something very specific and to be very sure of your purchase which it sounds like would be worth a few extra dollars for you. Or you save a few dollars and take the risk of getting something comparable, but not exact. Them's your options. *shrug*

I overthink everything. Stick out tongue

You're right though. I'm willing to spend more to get something that I'm comfortable with. If we go the Sam's route it will only be because we have laid on a mattress at Sam's and are ordering one we're sure we like. I won't order anything I can't try out.

  • At the Sam's where we bought ours, they had them on pull out rails that you could lay on and try out. We also looked at the model type and went to a big mattress store to make sure we were getting a better price and it was the same thing.

  • We just went to a bunch of stores and laid on them 'til we found one we both liked.  I'm super picky about them because of my back issues, and this was pre-kids when we had a lot more disposable income, so price wasn't a huge deal for us.  We ended up with a Cindy Crawford one from Rooms to Go and I still love it, it's SO comfy.
