small strawberries

I planted a strawberry plant last year. This year there are ton of little offshoot thingies growing, and the leaves are big and beautiful and green, but the strawberries are tiny! They have turned red and are just so small. What am I doing wrong?

TIA

Re: small strawberries

  • It sounds like it could be an alpine strawberry plant you got. They are a tiny variety of strawberry. They grow wild in my yard. Nothing wrong with them if this is the case, they are supposed to be this way!

actually, barren strawberry (tasteless) is also small and considered a weed.

were the flowers resulting in strawberries white or yellow?  If yellow, it's a barren strawberry/weed (which I don't believe is posionous or anything, it's just flavorless).  If it was white, then it's likely you do have alpine or small fruiting plant.

  • It can take 2 years for strawberries to really get established.  Maybe they are still considered babies?  My strawberries are finally out and they dont look very large but it's my first year with them.
  • This happened to me last year with my "ozark beauty" strawberry plants.  I only got a few really, really small fruit.  It was the second year for these plants.  The first year they didn't do anything.  I think I got diseased fruit or soil.  They didn't come back this year.

If you have a ton of the small berries, you may need to pinch some off.

It's a Quinault strawberry. I guess I'll just leave it for another year and see what happens. Thanks!
