Where to order tulips from?
DH and I have decided our front yard needs a bit more spring color. We have a TON of daffodils but would like to add some tulips for variety.
Any good online resources? Also, any suggestion on how to stop the stupid rabbits from eating them?
Re: Where to order tulips from?
I just went to Lowes and opened my wallet. All the bulbs were categorized by early/mid/late spring so I got a bunch for each! You plant them in the fall anyway so you have time to buy.
For rabbits, best thing is to sprinkle any type of pepper around the plants. You have to repeat whenever it rains but if you are consistent then they will learn to go elsewhere. If you stop right when the blooms are done then they can come in and eat up the busted flowers!
Hi!
I typically get mine from local nurseries but I did pick up a big bag of them from Costco when we bought the house. I'm sad to report that of the 100 tulips I planted from that bag only 1 still survives!
All of that time to plant them and the cost to buy them went down the drain thanks to the squirrels and chipmunks. The first year about half of them came up. Many were eaten and others were moved to random locations I know I didn't plant them like the ditch alongside the road. They still put on a beautiful display on either side of our driveway. But the squirrels really got at them the last two years and now we just have one lone tulip.
So the lesson is dig a big trench/wide hole. Line with chicken wire (or ideally something with smaller holes) on the bottom and sides. Add soil and blubs. Then top with another piece of wire mesh and finish off with more soil.
Also make sure you get a variety that is truly hardy for zone 5. Some will say they are but won't last for more than a year or two.
Brecks.com. SIgn up for their catalog. They will send them with massive coupon codes.
Very high quality bulbs, too.
I like brecks too. They have a lifetime warrenty on the bulbs. I had some that didn't come up one yr (they might have been in too wet of area) and they replaced them no problem last fall and this year they they all came up nice n pretty.
I am ordering more of these this yr http://brecks.com/product.asp?pn=67422
