Recommend your favorite kids' books (PIP if you want to)
We're going to start a collection of children's books for our grandberry (he/she was a blueberry last week and is a raspberry this week, so it seems fitting...), so we can get him/her started early on enjoying reading. I have a few favorites of my own in mind, plus a few that I remember my kids loving, but I'd love to hear any suggestions. What were some of your very favorite books when you were little, or if you have kids, what are some of their favorites? PIP if you're so inclined, so I know what to look for at the bookstore!

There's a Monster at the End of this Book is one of my all time favorites (there is even a sequel: There is Another Monster at the End of this Book)
I also love: Wocket in my Pocket, If I Ran the Zoo, My Many Colored Days, Fish Out of Water, Button Soup, Spooky Old Tree
I loved reading growing up and I love reading to my niece and nephews, I cannot wait to read to my own kids, we too will have a stocked library.
I knew there was a good reason why we get along! This was my absolute favorite book as a kid. I made my grandma read it over and over and over...and over...and over again.
Omigosh...I had somehow managed to never hear of "Love You Forever" until high school, when one of my best guy friends used it for a dramatic reading in Theatre class. I swear, I cried like a baby!
Ummm....Everyone poops, hands down, awesome.
Any of the Eric Carle books.
When my SIL had her baby shower, on the invitation it said something along the lines of "Please bring your favorite childhood book" or something like that. So my niece started out with a large assortment of books. It's a great idea.
My sister and I thought about doing this, too. I didn't know how guests might respond to that, but I guess if they don't like the idea, they don't have to participate in that part.

I have 2 older brothers and they used to read to me but change the stories. Like Bobo and his blue jacket became Bobo and his blue underwear. Then my mom would read me the story and I would go "Mom it's underwear not jacket" and they would be busted hehe.

I've been to a few showers that did it and I think it's a wonderful idea. They had people do this instead of buying a card and then wrote who it was from in the front cover and attached to present. I think there was a poem in the invite about how cards are read an tossed away but how a book can be enjoyed over and over. A book isn't much more than a card anyways.

I love anything by Dr. Seuss or Theo LeSieg:
Goodnight Moon, The Giving Tree are also amazing.
The little girl I work with also loves the book, "Pinkalicious".
They did this at one of my showers this weekend and I loved it. But, since most kids books are at least $8, it's kind of costly. So, if you do it, I would say to write on there that it's optional...or something.
My nephew (who is four) gave these books to us because they are some of his favorites (and I thought that was really sweet!):

Whenever I read this with my niece and nephew I pretend that the pages are hard to turn (I mean when Grover puts bricks over a page of course it will be hard to turn) and have them help me turn them. My niece is 8 now (and still likes to be read to) and always makes me STILL pretend it is hard to turn the pages! They always make me read it over and over and over too....it is a classic!

The last shower I went to, the invitation said to bring your fav book to buildthe new baby's library. That was the first I'd heard of it and I thought it was awesome. I don't know how to limit getting a ton of the same books, but I love the idea.
I don't see any reason why someone wouldn't do this.

Definitely any Eric Carle books....The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Polar Bear, Polar bear are my favs.
Also love Dr. Seuss----Green Eggs and Ham and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish are classics
My favs are anything by Chris Van Alsberg. His illustrations are AMAZING!!! They are not really for babies, but great for slightly older kids. Polar Express, Jumanji, The Widow's Broom
I also love If You Give A Mouse A Cookie and If You Give A Moose A Muffin
We are doing this for our unconceived baby :-) My MIL and I are also planning SIL's baby shower and put a little poem saying If you're considering a card consider this instead, sign your favorite storybook to read to baby in bed.
My favorites are Horton Hatches the Egg, I am not going to get up today, and anything else Dr. Seuss, Curious George, Clifford, and the Berenstein Bears. I also got the cutest pop up book at work today (we have a book display once a month or so in the faculty room) it is called The Little Green Turtle.
Oh and you can't go wrong with Little Golden Books, I'm currently searching for a beat up copy of Bunnies ABC or the Little Golden Book of Animals to decorate the nursery with and have found quite a few I forgot about loving.
About 2 weeks before we found out my daughter was pregnant, my parents just gave me a HUGE box full of all my Little Golden Books from when I was a kid...I have duplicates of some of them. I'll check and see if either of those are among the titles.
Ohh yeah, I forgot about the "Llama Llama" books. Those are great!
