What do you do with your weeds?

I just dug up an entire large recycling bin full of weeds and grass that was creeping into my landscaped area. I'm not sure if I should compost them, dispose of them in the garbage, or what else to do with them. We can't burn in our subdivision, so that's not an option. Any suggestions?

Re: What do you do with your weeds?

  • I'm probably no help. My city has a yard waste dump, so thats where mine go here.

My parents live in the country, and they burn everything.
  • I'm too afraid to compost them myself.  I don't think my pile gets hot enough to kill them.  So I separately bag mine and the county picks them up as part of their yard waste recycling program.  They pick up bagged grass, weeds, and small limbs and chop them into mulch which I can pick up for free.

I will have to look into this and see if my county does this too! Thanks!

  • If they don't have seeds or seed pods, I compost.

otherwise they go into the yard waste pickup like alliapistor.

  • If they are invasive (like garlic mustard) I bag and label for the pick-up our town has.  They burn them in a furnace that filters the smoke so no tiny seeds escape.  It's only for invasives though they won't take other weeds.  Those we compost or put in our brush pile.

They compost. I usually let them lie right where I pluck them. As kastle said, it's critical to do this before they can form seeds.

If I am weeding somewhere as they are blooming, I try not to let the seeds or pollen get away, they go to the trash. I even freak out a little when people let their weeds get real tall, flower, and THEN they decide it's time to mow them down! I just think about how effectively they are shooting the weed seeds out the side of the damn mower (my neighbors on both sides... I need to build brick walls).

  • If they have not gone to seed, I compost them.

If they have seeds on them, I put them in a lawn and leaf bag and set them on the curb. I hope the city does something eco-friendly with them, but if they don't, they are at least out of my yard.

  • I throw mine over the fence in the woods! I don't know what I would do if we couldn't do that.

Basically this!  We have a hedgerow in the back yarn and all my weeds/leaves/fallen branches etc get tossed in.

Yard waste dump in our township, or we dump them in the field behind my parents house.
