I'm going to be in San Francisco for work next week and it looks like I will be on my own for one or two nights. Where should I eat? I'm open to restaurants with people-watching and quicker, more casual places. I'll be staying at Howard and Steuart streets and the office is about two blocks west. If I can walk there or take the bus, I'll go!
I've only been to SF once (6 years ago) and while I loved every place I ate, because my friends who lived there at the time picked them out, I can't remember the name of a single one! Argh!
Re: *MM - need eating recs*
You're in walking distance of the Ferry Building, one of my favorite places in the city. It's particularly great for it's Saturday farmer's market, but I'm betting you won't be there on the weekend. If you're there on a Monday: Hog Island Oysters in the Ferry Building has $1 oyster/half-price beer happy hour (or at least they did 4 years ago). Somewhat upscale/really tasty Vietnamese: Slanted Door (I ate there the night we got engaged). Casual/sit outside: Gott's (used to be Taylor's Automatic Refresher) -- yummy yummy tuna burger. Or just buy Cowgirl Creamery Cheese and Acme Bread and head to the wine bar. And all that is just in the Ferry Building.
Nearby in the Rincon Center, go to Yank Sing for great dim sum and other chinese food.
Walk further down the Embarcadero (toward the GG Bridge) to Pier 23. It's mostly a bar with some outdoor waterfront seating, but has the best fried calamari I've ever had.
Head up to North Beach and get a Pittsburgh-style sandwich at Giordano Bros (YUMMY), or go to Sodini's for Italian. (Sodini's food is good, but honestly not blow-your-mind great...but it has such a great vibe, and usually has "real" North Beach people eating/drinking there.) DON'T go to the Stinking Rose (touristy and a hit-or-miss).
If you're interested in an expensive but funniest/kitchiest drink ever, go to the Tonga Room in the Fairmont Hotel. That place is awesome. (Make sure the band is on duty before you go.)
If you have any breakfast time free that's not a Monday (they're closed on Mondays), go to Mama's on Washington Square in North Beach. Get the chocolate cherry french toast! yum!
If you REALLY want to take a bus ride, go out to the Outer Richmond and get dim sum at Ton Kiang.
If you're headed to the Inner Sunset, go to Ebisu for sushi or Park Chow for great homestyle food. Other great homestyle food is at Home in the Castro.
Other great sushi is at Sushi Groove on Hyde (also a bus ride)...but your hotel is in walking distance from Ozumo, which is supposed to have great sushi -- I've just never been there.
I have more thoughts on bars if you're interested...
