Baby Shower menu when not at a typical time

I am planning a baby shower for my sister and wanted to see if you lovely ladies had any menu ideas for a shower on a Friday night?  She works 6a-6p Wed, Thur, Sat, Sun.  So a typical Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon shower is out.  We thought we could do a Friday since she doesn't work and we could probably do it a little earlier (like 5pm).

Would you just do light appetizers or would you do a nice meal since it's over the dinner hour???  Thoughts, ideas, tips would be helpful.

Re: Baby Shower menu when not at a typical time

  • I like appetizers so I think that would be fun. What does your Sister like more? Is she more of a nice, sit down dinner person or more casual, relaxed? If its the latter, I'd go with lots of apps.

  • I'd probably shoot for 6-8, rather than 5, if you want anyone to come who does work.  As for menu, I'd expect at least heavy apps at that time of day because it is right during the dinner hour.
  • Good point...I was thinking 5 because I don't work on Fridays but that makes total sense.

She's very casual and relaxed so that would be a good idea.  Unfortunately she's also been somewhat sick her entire pregnancy so not sure if its better to go appetizers and have a large variety so she can eat what she knows she can eat or just make a meal that I know she can eat.

  • Heavy apps.

    We're kind of going out.
  • If you do apps (which I love!), I'd put that on the invite so people don't come expecting a full meal even though, as well all know, you can eat a full meal's worth of appetizers!
  • If you are going to have a shower at dinner time, I think you should serve a meal.
  • If you would have it from 6-8:00 or something similar, I would plan to have substantial food since that's dinner time for most people. Heavy apps could work, but plan items that will be filling if they're being served instead of dinner (i.e. not just veggies & dip or cheese & crackers).

Honestly, it's probably less work to make a meal than a bunch of heavy apps. Depending on the apps, they can be more time-intensive to make than an entree.

I have to say, I agree with this.  Plus, it would be easier to make a meal than a whole bunch of appetizers, and I think you would have to make a lot to fill everyone's needs.

  • I've hosted Friday evening baby and wedding showers, and I did heavy apps and desserts.  The bridal shower was actually technically a "dessert shower" (bride reeaaaaaly likes sweets!) but we included several savory options as well.  Both of these showers started a little later (7 or 7:30 was when it started).  I don't remember everything we served... We had a ridiculous amount of food... I just can't remember what it was!

I think a more standard meal would work fine too, and would be easier in some ways (I had friends helping me provide food).  For me the heavy-app thing worked well, because I didn't have enough space for everyone to comfortably SIT and eat an actual meal all at one time... And I wanted the more unstructured, casual, party-like atmosphere (as opposed to a more formal feeling sit-down party). But that's also why I picked the later start time...
