Children of addicts, come out please!

my father is a drug addict and that he recently got fired from yet another job. He decided to use this to "clean up his life". I've been down this road a thousand times with him before, and i never really get my hopes up that he'll actually stay clean this time.

He just called me, rambling and raving about the world ending tomorrow and how its those goddamn religious folks that started all this bullshit to begin with (not sure what bullshit he is talking about) and how if Arnold Schwarzenagger can live with his love child for 10 years, then that should be proof enough that religion is made up.

Welcome back, Charlie Sheen.

Would Al-Anon take me even tho its cocaine, and not alcohol, that my dad uses?  Its about time I confronted this demons.

Re: Children of addicts, come out please!

  • Al-Anon will take you no matter the addiction your family member is dealing with (or not dealing with.)  And it sounds like you could use a good support group right now.  I hope you find some peace and clarity.

  • ai yiyi. Dear old dad...:(

Yes, Al Anon will gladly open its doors to you. AlAnon is for the loved ones of those with an addiction, any kind of addiction at all.

Your dad also sounds like he may have some type of mental illness. I am pretty sure some degree of mental illness goes along with the territory of substance addiction.

  • Both of my parents were/are addicts. My dad has been in AA the last 15 years and put me in Al Anon/ Al-A-teen at a young age. I truly think it helped me cope with my parents behavior and it is the reason that I am able to "understand" them better. My mom is a drug user as well, so don't be afraid to try Al Anon even though it's not centrally drug based. They will still teach you and support you. Good luck to you.

  • (((((Hugs)))) to you. My dad drank way too much, in fact I think he was an alcoholic but of course he never admitted it.  Anyway, I think it is so selfish of the addict considering what they put family members through.  Be it intentional or not, it makes me sad to think the pain and hardship.  I hope you are able to get the help you need and your dad too.  (((hugs))) again... • I've been attending Al-Anon since I was 18.  There's a few ppl in my group that have a family or friend dealing with drug addiction.

    5 Love Its

Nothing new, just another voice in favor of AlAnon for any addiction. I went to them in my twenties, when I was struggling with what my parents' alcohol and prescription drug abuse issues had left me with emotionally, and it was a lifesaver. I learned to deal with them as flawed people I loved but could protect myself from, as opposed to LifeTime Rulers Of All My Life and Fuccking Me Up Along The Way.

Good luck; I hope you can feel better soon.

  • Nothing new to add, just that I wish you luck and I'm sorry you have to deal with this. :(
