XP: anniversary ideas needed (for a Houston nestie)

Hello...I'm a nestie that usually posts on the Houston board. DH & I are thinking about escaping Houston for a few days and I'm considering Dallas/Ft. Worth...but I'm not familiar with that area at all.

Any recs on where to stay, where to eat, what to do? We'll be around for 4-5 days.

Thank you!

  • Like Houston, the DFW area is really large. Is there a side of town you would prefer as in Dallas vs. Fort Worth? Without narrowing it down you could end up with a bunch of great recs that are more than an hour from each other.

I am a Fort Worth Nestie, so for FW I would recommend:

    Stay

Any hotel in downtown (Omni, Worthington, Marriott) or if you are interested in a more Western-feel - the Hyatt in the Stockyards. If these are too costly, there are some clean/nice hotels over near TCU.

    Eat

Cheap - Riscky's, LoveShack, Fred's Texas Cafe, Paco and John, Spiral Diner

    Mid-Range - Patrizio, Brownstone, Joe T. Garcia's, Lucille's, Blue Mesa, Mi Cocina, Gloria's

More Costly - Tillman's Roadhouse, Lonesome Dove Bistro, Del Frisco's, Texas De Brazil, Bonnell's, Reata, Ellerbe Fine Foods

    Do

    Stockyards

    Botanical Garden

    Zoo

    Museums

Patio at 8.0 on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday night

Patio at Fred's on Friday or Saturday night and Sunday afternoon

    Catch a concert at Billy Bob's - Friday/Saturday night

Movie at the Movie Tavern on West 7th (good for rainy day)

  • I'm a Dallas OMH so here's my two cents.  I'm also thinking y'all will have your car and there's no reason to not spend a couple of days in each city.

Hotels:  Hyatt Regency in Downtown (near Reunion Tower), Adolphus (Downtown), Meridien (up near our Galleria).  I highly suggest going to Priceline and bidding.  You could also stay at the Hyatt Regency at the airport (DFW) and be in the middle of everything.  My husband has Pricelined them several times for our bad weather stays and gotten it for about $60 a night.

Eat:  Campisi's (Italian), Sambuca (Uptown Dallas), Twisted Root (hamburgers), Burger House, Old Hickory Steakhouse (at the Gaylord in Grapevine), and, if you like seafood, Trulucks (three locations that I know of:  Uptown, Addison and Southlake).  Also, if you do end up in Fort Worth and like seafood, try Daddy Jack's Seafood in Sundance Square.

To do:  6th Floor Museum, Old Red Courthouse (history of Dallas County; it's really awesome), North Park (our nicest mall; they have lots of high end window shopping).  There are also lots of little town centers popping up all over.  Some good ones are:  Southlake Town Center (just west of the airport); Highland Village (not as big as Southlake but still nice); The Shops at Legacy.  All three of these have shopping, good restaurants that might be parts of small chains but are still way better than others, have movie theaters and, with the exception of the one in Highland Village, have a hotel right there too.  We also enjoy the White Rock Lake area with the Dallas Arboretum.  Dallas Blooms is over but it's still very pretty.

There's also a town called Addison.  They have lots of restaurants.  Some are part of large chains, some part of small chains and some originals.  There are some hotels in Addison and it's near the Galleria (2nd nicest mall).

I had no idea...I'd always imagined it closer.

We will have our own car. I'm thinking about doing medieval times one night (which I LOVED as a kid and seems like something...different that we might enjoy). IDK if that helps at all though...

I've never been to DFW, so I don't have any prefs for where we'd stay. Looks like I need to do some more research--though I'm appreciating all the great recs!

Like I said, if you're doing four/five nights, I would suggest doing a couple in each city.

  • If you want to do Medieval Times, then stick to Dallas and go with some of Julie's recs for sure!

Reunion Tower is pretty cool too, for that side of town!

Yep, totally missed the 4/5 nights thing... try both cities for sure!  They're very different.

  • Oh, yeah, Reunion Tower has a new restaurant by Wolfgang Puck.  Not only do you get the awesome skyline but some great food.
  • If you choose downtown Ft Worth...I LOVE the Embassy Suites. Free happy hour every evening with snacks and free breakfast (w/omlette bar). Rooms are really nice too, and lots of bars and resturants within walking distance.

ETA: And I second Twisted Root Burger in Dallas, very good. Try the fried green beans. They were featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

  • For our dating anniversary every year, we stay at the Omni in Las Colinas and eat at Pappas Bros. steakhouse.  (You can Priceline the Omni and we usually get it for around $80).

Our wedding anniversary restaurant is 560 (in the "ball" at the old Reunion Arena) and the hotel is the Warwick Melrose in Uptown where we got married.  Uptown is a great area with lots of restaurants, shopping, movie theaters, a park, etc.  Very cool part of town.
