Cruise People

I know some of you are big cruisers.  We are thinking about running away around Christmas.  Jim and I have been going to spend the holiday's with my family since his aren't big on celebrating and we are, but it's just going to be too hard and sad this year.  My sister thinks she might run away, too.

Anyway, we've never done a cruise so I'm looking a recommendations for a line that you've taken and enjoyed.  We'd probably enjoy one that is not as overrun with high school/college kids gone wild, if that narrows the field any.

  • I have no recommendations, but I am going to follow this post to.

  • We liked Norwegian because of the freestyle dining, I liked being able to choose who I wanted to eat with, or just eat with Sean. We went around thanksgiving, but I have a feeling all cruises around Xmas time will have families. Maybe Celebrity Cruise line they seem more "grown up"

  • We did our HM cruise on Celebrity and LOVED it! It definitely targets the older crowd, there were very few young'uns. (Then again, I believe Alaska generally attracts an older crowd too.) Since we were on our HM and wanted to be anti-social, we requested a table for 2. The food was amazing too!

I believe Princess and Holland America are also good if you want the more sophisticated vibe. But it does depend a little bit on the destination and, as MO mentioned, the time of year.

Definitely avoid Carnival, and avoid Royal Caribbean if you can. They're more geared towards families (water slides as opposed to spa pools, or jazz lounges vs rock concerts, for example) and partying teens.

You won't be able to avoid teens and families completely but each line is definitely geared towards a specific audience. cruisecritic.com has lots of great info, that's where V did most of his research.

  • Actually if it's mainly teens & college kids you want to avoid, probably the easiest way to do that is to pick a more expensive cruise line. Stick out tongue

  • B and I also did a cruise on our HM.  We went on Regent in French Polynesia, which we basically chose because it was the only cruise line there.  We absolutely loved it, and would do another Regent cruise in a heart beat (the line goes everywhere).  That being said, it was pricey, but all food and alcohol was included, which from what I understand, is not how must cruise lines are.

Somewhere in the Caribbean.  We would like to leave from B'more, since it's so close, but those are 7 days and Jim doesn't want to go for that long.  The alternative is to fly to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, but with airfare, it would be considerably more.  Negotiations are on-going. Big Smile
