Did you win or lose with your new last name?
When I first told one of my colleagues what my new last name was going to be, she responded that I had lost the last name game. My new last name was longer (6 letters to 14 letters) AND further down in the alphabet (P to W).
So how did you fare? Other factors (such as pronouncability, how it sounds with your first name, etc) can be brought considered.
Re: Did you win or lose with your new last name?
Hmm.. if I dig far enough I think I won..
My name barely changed. I went from C to C, both are 6 letters [And the first three letters are exactly the same] and easy to pronoune and spell.. the only "plus" is that I went from 3 syllables to 2.
well I went from K to B, so win I'm not so far down anymore.
went from 8 letters to 5 Win again!
both of our full names have the same amount of letters in each! 6-4-5 i think it's pretty cool!
new name does get mispronounced but so did my old one. so tie!
I guess I won? Like Kearstin though, there isn't much difference between my new last name an my maiden name. Both start with Ha. His is a bit more common than mine and has only 6 letters to my previous 7, but I had to actually count them to make sure they weren't the same length. I guess Kearstin and I were excused from the not using your married monogram before the wedding, huh?
No joke, you have no idea how many people mentioned this or something to this effect to me. I even got monogrammed towels for the shower, and everyyyyone thought it was so funny that it was Kearstin C(maiden) andddd it could also beeeeee Kearstin C(married)... so annoying.
I moved up from O to H
I went from 8 letters to 6
and my new last name? follows the rules of the english language. My maiden name? FORGET the I before E rule....I before e, except after c...and my O maiden name LOL

Well I hyphenated, so I'm not sure if that is a win or lose? My maiden name is first. I think a factor (at least it was for me in my decision) was how common the last name is. If you googled me with my maiden name I am the only one. If you google (or search on fb) for Karen dh-lastname there are thousands. I like being unique, so with the hyphenated name I am definitely the only person in the world with this name. Plus I'm published (academically) with my maiden name, so I had to keep it somewhere to not lose my professional self.
I'm waiting to close on our house before I finish changing my name (so I can change name and address all at once), but people already mess up my name all the time. Even when people see Karen Mxxxxxxx-Cxxxxxx, they still call me Mrs. Cxxxxxx, which to me sounds weird as that is my MIL's name, not mine :-)

I lost. I went from a five letter, easy Irish last name to an eight letter German last name with two silent letters that always gets mispronounced and is impossible for people to spell...no matter how slow I say it.
But I moved up a little in the alphabet...
Megan & Chris
Downgrade...
Went from H to S, 6 letters to 7, and have a last name that has like 5 spellings, so can't just say it and expect it spelled right!
Plus, I had to scrap one of my potential favorite baby names (Sean) as the initial sound is too similar, and the other name I'd contemplated during my 20's spells out A-S-S for initials. Sooooooo not happening.

Heck yes I do!
Win!
I kept the first letter, B to B, and went from 7 letters to 4. My new last name is very common so that is the only downfall, but at least I don't get asked to spell it anymore.
I lost a letter, got easier to spell (If I have to spell Smith the person is an idiot) and isn't often mispronounced.
But there is actually another Rebecca J Smith in my school district so I'm always getting the wrong email address... and I moved way down the alphabet from C to S...and I'm no longer RC
Duh...winning!
Although, a lot of it depends on one's perspective. I chose to go the two-last-names-no-hyphen route, but I usually only use my maiden name professionally. It's a long, complicated issue. I was married before, but got my maiden name back in the divorce and never changed it legally until Ron and I got married, at which time I adopted my maiden name as a second middle name. So, I either went from M to W or M to D, depending on how you look at it.
Either way, both names are far easier to spell and pronounce than my previous married name, and my new married last name is one letter shorter, so I'm calling it a win.
I feel like I lost, simply becaue I loved my maiden name. It's much better.
I went from a 6-letter K, to a 3-letter W.
Interesting (depending on who you ask lol) fact:
KW are my husbands initials.
My first, middle & maiden last name have 6 letters each, with my first and last name having 2 of the same letter in a row.
I went down in the alphabet (J to P), and ended up with a name that is more difficult to figure out how to pronounce, and difficult to spell on the phone because of the letters in it - P, E, G, S, L. I'm constantly saying P as in panda, E as in elephant, etc.
I did however manage to not end up with a last name that was longer than my maiden name (9 letters), I'm now at 8 letters. Ironically I always said that I would only marry someone with a shorter last name

Lol, ditto!
My initials are now H(M)H. My family and fam-IL all call me "HaHa" now and I kinda like.
My maiden name was already hyphenated. The first name started with Z and is Polish; so it was difficult to say and a mouthful when I introducted myself.
I totally won the name game!

I went from B (6 letters) to M (6 letters) so I am further down. But, on the plus side, ok to explain this my maiden name was Butler. I heard so many 'butt' jokes growing up. When I played basketball people would call me Butt and I HATED it!!
So although, I went down in the alphabet, I felt like I got a plus to get rid of the butt part.
