I've had bursitis in my hip off and on for about 5 years now. It's gotten worse over the last few months, to the point I can no longer run. So, I decided it was [finally] time to see a specialist.
The doc confirmed that it was bursitis, and recommended physical therapy.
I went to my first PT appt yesterday morning. I expected it to be uncomfortable, but had no idea just how painful it was going to be!
Turns out my muscles around the hip and down the outside of my leg are atrophied. The therapist did some deep tissue massage to increase circulation and stimulate healing, and O M G I've never experienced anything so painful before in my life. Apparently, deep tissue massage does not hurt when done with health muscle (she demonstrated for me on my other leg) but it was excruciating on the outside of my leg and hip!
I can't even remember that half hour or so clearly because of how much pain I was in!
I need to go 2-3x/week for 4-6 weeks...yikes. I'm [obviously] going to keep going, so I can start running again, but I'm terrified!
Re: complaining about PT
Man, that sucks! Hopefully it becomes easier over time.
Can I ask what doc you went to see? I've got a broad assortment of joint problems and my mom pointed out to me that I shoudl probably actually see somebody about them before I get KU'd so my hips don't just go ahead and fall out of the damn sockets when all the ligament loosening stuff happens.
I don't have a PCP, so I'm kinda shooting blind. I'm not even sure what kind of specialist I'm looking for.
My Goodness...another food blog. Featuring: Macarons from a old post with a photo taken by my mom for a break from my crappy food photos!
I saw Dr. Silber from Advanced Centers for Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine

I would not rec Dr. Silber himself--he was a giant pr!ck. There's a bunch of docs in that group though. They have an office in Eldersburg and one in Westminster (maybe others too).
I was very happy with the staff in the PT part of the office though. Very thorough, explained everything, and really seemed to know what they were doing.

I wouldn't have gone back either! And what's with the hot pool?? I've never seen (online, medical books) or heard (doc, physical therapist, etc) that heat is good for the bursa!
If it didn't keep me from running and whatnot, I totally wouldn't be doing this :-P
